Silent Movies: The Passion of Joan of Arc, Fritz Lang, and It's the Old Army Game
This week the San Francisco Silent Film Festival begins, five days of classic movies presented with live music. If you can't make it to the event, why not curl up with one of these excellent releases from the earliest days of cinema:
The Passion of Joan of Arc - directed by Carl Theodore Dreyer in 1928, this film has rightly stood the test of time as one of the most moving and effecting silent films ever made; Fritz Lang: The Silent Films - an excellent set, presenting a collection of the director's classic silent works in excellent shape with lossless audio and a nice selection of extras; and It's the Old Army Game - W.C. Fields’ 1926 silent comedy is very funny with lots of charming footage of Louise Brooks to boot.
