DVD Talk Radio: Interview with Primer Director Shane Carruth
Writer/Director/Producer/Editor/Composer Shane Carruth did something as seemingly impossible as time travel - he made a great movie for only $7,000. Primer's micro budget and the 'questionable film making' advice from many of the people around him, never stood in the way of Carruth's drive to make his film. The results have been spectacular, Primer took both the Grand Jury Prize and the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and now has it's getting a special edition DVD release. DVD Talk Editor Geoffrey Kleinman sat down with Shane Carruth to talk about the DVD release for Primer. Carruth talks about what inspired him to make Primer, how he managed to make such a complex and interesting film with so little money and what the connection is between Primer and All The President's Men. Download the complete audio interview Shane Carruth or listen live online with our DVD Talk Radio Player. Also be sure to check out DVD Talk Radio for interviews and other great audio content including recent interviews with: James L. Brooks, Brett Ratner and Brad Bird.

DVD Talk Interview: Jim Van Bebber - The Manson Family
It took Jim Van Bebber over 15 years to get his movie The Manson Family made. The result is one of the most intense and telling versions of the Tate-LaBianca crimes ever created, a film that focuses on both the killers and the victims with the same, unsentimental eye. Many have dismissed The Manson Family as the most gratuitous of exploitation extremes. Others have argued that it is a misunderstood masterwork, years ahead of its time in both style and substance. DVD Talk interviewer Bill Gibron had a chance to speak with Jim Van Bebber and got his insight into the ongoing debate, and got a peek into the creation of this incendiary epic. Read the complete interview with Director Jim Van Bebber and Read our review for The Manson Family DVD.

DVD Savant - Matango: Attack of the Mushroom People

This week, he's back with a look at Matango: Attack of the Mushroom People - a creepy and unsettling film from director Ishiro Honda: a handful of high-toned Tokyo castaways are tempted by hunger to taste the forbidden fruit of a mysterious island: colorful, tasty mushrooms with unexpected side effects. DVD Savant also has reviews up for: Li'l Abner - a funny musical with a great non-P.C. storyline coupled with witty songs and sexy hillbillies, Panic in Year Zero! / The Last Man on Earth - MGM gives you the choice which way the world ends - atomic obliteration or a plague-driven zombie holocaust, The Flower of My Secret - Pedro Almodovar's least-bombastic drama features Marisa Paredes as a writer going through a nervous breakdown, Laura Fox's first entry in its new film noir line is as finely appointed as one of their studio classics discs and The Four Feathers - The Korda brother's big 1939 hit is the perfect English colonial epic, full of derring-do, oaths given and honor upheld. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

DVD Savant - The Mysterians, Bringing Up Baby and Stage Door
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: The Mysterians - the screen explodes (repeatedly) with furious multicolored battles against the invaders from Mysteroid, who only want a few thousand acres of choice real estate and dating privileges with our women (gasp). Earth needs a good negotiator or at least better ray guns to defeat a titanic robot, flying saucers that sound like tuning forks, and a lethal battle dome equipped with the latest WMD's. Toho's best, in a great DVD package from Media Blasters/Tokyo Shock. Bringing Up Baby - the most famous screwball comedy is also one of Katharine Hepburn's best, with Cary Grant tagging along in helpless patsy mode. Arrowsmith John Ford was possibly not the right director for this wildly illogical melodrama about medical ethics and the sanctity of research and Stage Door - Ginger Rogers and Katharine Hepburn shine in this backstage war-horse that gives talents like Ann Miller, Lucille Ball and Eve Arden plum parts as aspiring actresses. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
