New Movie Reviews: Pirates of the Caribbean, Bug and Angel-A
Heading into the holiday weekend the latest Blockbuster looking to strike box office gold is Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End - Captain Jack Sparrow and company finish up the thrill-ride of a trilogy which delivers as the proverbial popcorn movie. Lion's Gate may have tried to hide Bug from critics, but DVD Talk's Brian Orndorf quite liked this unique dramatic thriller. Luc Besson returns to the silver screen this week with Angel-A- a dear and surprising film that ranks with his best. Another film out this week that's under the radar screen is Paprika - the latest treat from Satoshi Kon (director of Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, and Tokyo Godfathers). We're also excited to give you a sneak peek at Knocked Up - which debuts next week from Judd Apatow, it's a movie so good you should mark the release date on your calendar. Silent DVD: Romance of The Western Chamber
It's been an extremely slow year for Silent films on DVD this year. After a bit of a hiatus our Silent DVD returns with a round up of recently released silent DVDs. Included in this installment of Silent DVD are overviews of Smiles & Spectacles - The Harold Lloyd Treasury and Kino's Reel Baseball. In addition we have an extended review of Romance of the Western Chamber - a rather rare item to DVD; a silent movie from China. Romance of the Western Chamber was made in Shanghai in 1927, and is based on the play of the same name that dates back to the Yuan Dynasty (1234-1368). It's short, lasting only 42 minutes, but has some interesting aspects including some martial arts fighting and a large scale battle. Read this installment of Silent DVD. New Movies Reviews: Shrek the Third and Knocked Up
Everyone's favorite green ogre is back in theaters with the release of Shrek the Third this week. Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy reprise their roles alongside John Cleese, Rupert Everett, Antonio Banderas and newcomer Justin Timberlake. There's a whole lot of laughs (and an awful lot of heart) to be had at the box office as Shrek the Third, opens everywhere this weekend. Also in theaters next week is Knocked Up - Judd Apatow (Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin) proves, once again, that he's a genius writer/director by knocking it out of the park with his latest comedy starring Seth Rogan and Katherine Heigl. Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean Goes Blu-Ray
Pirates of the Caribbean Blu-Ray This week Disney unveiled an extremely significant step in the High-Def format war - a double barreled shot of Pirates of the Caribbean on Blu-Ray. Timed with the theatrical release of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Disney is releasing both Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest [Review] on filled-to-the-brim 50GB Blu-Ray Discs. To mark the occasion Disney pulled together a who's who of home entertainment press along with their top executives to make their case on why they're betting it all on Blu-Ray. Aniblaxplotation?: Afro Samurai Hits DVD
Afro Samurai With a name like "Afro Samurai" and a near-camp star like Samuel L. Jackson giving voice to the lead character, it's not a big leap to envision a kung-fu spoof in the vein of Undercover Brother. Then the first spurt of arterial spray crosses the screen in the middle of a sword vs. arsenal showdown, and you realize, this show is deadly serious. New Movie Reviews: 28 Weeks Later, Georgia Rule, and The Ex
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland may not be back (at least not as the directing and writing team), but 28 Weeks Later still packs quite the rage-virus-inspired punch. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo takes a seat in the director's chair and picks up the story six months after London was ravaged by the deadly virus. Get your rage on as 28 Weeks Later opens everywhere this weekend. Also in theaters this week is Georgia Rule - this blunder of a film will probably end up being remembered only for Lindsay Lohan's on-set antics; The Ex - Zach Braff seems to have the slacker thing down to a science at this point; and Away From Her - the immensely talented Sarah Polley makes her feature-length directorial debut with this heartfelt adaptation of an Alice Munro story. New Movie Reviews: Spider-Man 3, Waitress, and Lucky You
Sam Raimi's latest web-slinging adventure, Spider-Man 3, is so huge that we actually have not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 reviews. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst are back, along with a couple new baddies, to thrill audiences and rule the box office once again. If your Spidey Sense is tingling that's because Spider-Man 3 opens everywhere this weekend. Also in theaters this week is Waitress - Adrienne Shelly's return to film also, unfortunately, ends up being her last after her horrific murder in NYC last November; Lucky You - Eric Bana, Robert Duvall, and Drew Barrymore star in Curtis Hanson's latest; and Killer of Sheep - Charles Burnett's 1977 masterpiece is finally making the art house rounds. TV on DVD Reviews: American Dad, Larry King Live and Moral Orel
American dad 2 A ton of TV on DVD releases reviewed recently including: American Dad: Vol. 2 - when it does what it does best, namely topical, out-there comedy, it's right up there with the best animated sitcoms; Larry King Live - The Greatest Interviews - has a lot to offer, particularly for its historical/archival value with a great many newsmakers of the past 20-plus years; Moral Orel, Vol. 1, The Unholy Edition - an excellent satire of religious extremists and a parody of the traditional family sitcom; Beverly Hills, 90210: Season 2 - engaging drama that range from common and not-so-common teenage angst to soapy melodrama situations; Melrose Place - Season 2 - plenty of soapy content to draw you in, and even more to keep coming back for more; Michael Palin's Around the World in 80 Days - it's impossible to put into words how magnificent and moving a series like this truly is; Robson Arms - The Complete First Season - one of the best "dramedies" to come along in a long time. DVD Savant: Royal Flash, Amy of Shadows and Les Miserables

This Week's Notable DVDs: Dreamgirls, Diggers and Alejandro Jodorwsky
Dreamgirls An interesting mix of notable DVDs this week including: Dreamgirls [Review] - Bill Condon hits another home run on a disc worthy of DVD Talk's highest rating; Diggers [Review] - Magnolia launches another of their 'day and date' titles, a charming indie film that completely wins you over by the last frame; Films of Alejandro Jodorwsky [Review] - with a legendary feud with producer Allen Klein over, the cult favorites of Jodorwsky finally find their way onto DVD, and it was worth the blood sweat and tears.
