New Reviews: The Herschell Gordon Lewis Feast, The Squid and the Whale, and Morris From America

Recent Notable Releases: Kubo and the Two Strings, One-Eyed Jacks, and Return of the Living Dead 3
Kubo and the Two Strings There are a few new releases this week that you won't want to miss. Check out these hot titles: Kubo and the Two Strings - a magical, sprawling, and thrilling animated experience with something profound and metaphorical at its core; One-Eyed Jacks - the only film directed by Marlon Brando, this is a rather unorthodox western in many ways but at the same time one that is clearly rooted in genre tradition; and Return Of The Living Dead 3 - a genuinely interesting and unique sequel and one of the best zombie movies of the nineties. Be sure to check out our DVD Talk Review Database for all the latest reviews including an entire section devoted to reviews of DVDs out this week.

New Reviews: Taxi Driver, Akira Kurosawa's Dreams, and The Goodbye Girl
Taxi Driver Some cool discs have been reviewed over the past week. Check out these recent entries: Taxi Driver - Martin Scorsese's movie is a rough, ugly, uncomfortable film, but it's wonderfully acted, beautifully constructed and entrancing to watch; Akira Kurosawa's Dreams: Criterion Collection - a great film from the famed director, it is bursting with color and imagination, it's the kind of film where almost every dollar of its budget has made it to the screen; and The Goodbye Girl - proof that it's the execution, and not the premise, that matters when it comes to putting together a piece of entertainment that's excellent, rings true, and doesn't condescend to its audience. TV on DVD: Star Trek: The Animated Series, Chicago Fire, and The Tonight Show
Star Trek: The Animated Series TV on DVD and Blu-ray remains very popular with more and more favorites being released. New TV reviews include: Star Trek: The Animated Series - featuring most of the Enterprise crew voicing their characters plus members of the original series' writing and production team, this is an imaginative collection of episodes with less constraints than the live-action material; Chicago Fire: Season Four - the program remains interesting but is already starting to feel a little tired with storylines from its first three years reworked with minor variations; and The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson - The Vault Series - a dozen somewhat-randomly-selected yet uncut episodes from the ‘70s, these programs show the master conversationalist at work with a wide variety of stars. Recent Notable Releases: Finding Dory, Dead Ringers, and Punch-Drunk Love
Finding Dory Several great movies and programs have come out recently, including a few that shouldn't be missed: Finding Dory - a technically stunning production that plays it safe and should entertain fans of the original with a reliably good mixture of comedy and emotional moments; Dead Ringers: Collector's Edition - one of David Cronenberg's best films, the polarizing movie is an uncomfortable but compelling examination of twin brothers spiraling out of control; and Punch-Drunk Love - Paul Thomas Anderson directs this scrappy, little, oft-misunderstood collection of visuals, sounds and emotion that coalesces into something touching and oddly romantic. Be sure to check out our DVD Talk Review Database for all the latest reviews including an entire section devoted to reviews of DVDs out this week.

Movies in Theaters: Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, and Elle
Arrival Before you head off to the cinema this weekend, check out DVD Talk's reviews of the latest releases including: Arrival [a second review] - remarkable filmmaking... a big budget mainstream Hollywood release with the passion and creativity of a plucky little indie; Hacksaw Ridge [a second review] - Mel Gibson's latest directorial effort is a movie that delivers on its promises, and deserves your time; and Elle - director Paul Verhoeven successfully blends differing tones together rather well in this film, but it goes a bit too far off the rails in the third act. Other recent films include: Doctor Strange, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, The Handmaiden, The Girl on the Train, Deepwater Horizon, and The Birth of a Nation. Check out these, and more, in DVDTalk's Theatrical Review section.

TV on DVD: Miami Vice, Girlfriend Experience, and American Horror Story: Hotel
Miami Vice - The Complete Series Some great TV shows have made their way onto home video recently including: Miami Vice - The Complete Series - this show holds up well... the series finds the right balance of style and substance and it features great work from the two leads and a killer supporting cast; Girlfriend Experience: Season One - Amy Seimetz and Lodge Kerrigan do a fantastic job with the appropriate levels of depth in this character study; and American Horror Story: Hotel - a reliable macabre-themed staple this fifth season of the show, broadens its focus a bit, drawing together vampires and mass-murderers and other supernatural entities into a surreal melting pot: a multi-floor building comprised of timeless, moody art-deco accouterments. Hush, Sweet Charlotte - this black-and-white Southern Gothic potboiler from 1964 is smoothly paced and assuredly directed by Robert Aldrich, and sumptuously shot by Joseph Biroc. TV on DVD: Knight Rider, The Flash, and Phobe: The Xenophobic Experiments
Knight Rider - The Complete Series (Blu-ray) Some great TV shows have made their way onto home video recently including: : Knight Rider - The Complete Series (Blu-ray) - this show is a lot of fun... it's goofy, but it's definitely entertaining and while the set is completely devoid of extras and it utilizes lossy audio, overall the transfers are a pretty decent improvement over the past DVD editions; The Flash: Season 2 - this second season offers a healthy balance of action, drama, humor, and emotion... it works on every level; and Phobe: The Xenophobic Experiments - this cult classic is the real deal: an inspired, memorable, and most of all authentic piece of Canadian DIY goodness. Recent Notable Releases: Star Trek Beyond, Burial Ground, and Night of the Grizzly
Star Trek Beyond There are some new titles coming out that might make it worth a trip to the video store. Check out these recent releases: Star Trek Beyond - despite ditching intellect for non-stop action, the spectacle is so constant and over-the-top, that it's a fun ride that makes up for the film's lack of fresh ideas; Burial Ground - fat-packed with ghouls of every possible flavor, it's eightysomething minutes of nonstop zombie carnage, and it's so completely off the rails that you just can't turn away; and Night of the Grizzly - popular during the 1970s as a family staple, this "family film with teeth" serves up a mix of comedy, drama, and action that hasn't so much aged well as remained frozen in time. Be sure to check out our DVD Talk Review Database for all the latest reviews including an entire section devoted to reviews of DVDs out this week.
