TV on DVD: Wolf's Rain, The Devil Is A Part-Timer, and The Bureau
Wolf's Rain: The Complete Series TV on DVD and Blu-ray remains very popular with more and more favorites being released. New TV reviews include: Wolf's Rain: The Complete Series - a modern anime classic that belongs on every animation enthusiasts shelf; The Devil Is A Part-Timer: Complete Series - watchable and certainly charming, this series features good characters and a solid dose of humor that contrast well with its darker elements; and The Bureau: Season 1 - a decent French spy series that never exactly catches fire but delivers some well-orchestrated thrills. Notable Releases: La La Land, Rumble Fish, and The Vampire Bat
La La Land 4K Ultra HD There are a few new releases this week that you won't want to miss. Check out these hot titles: La La Land 4K Ultra HD - this movie proves that musicals can still play on the big screen, providing a mix of both modernism and "Old Hollywood" that really works; Rumble Fish: Criterion Collection - Francis Ford Coppola's film pairs crisp black-and-white cinematography and stylish editing with the angst of restless gang life in Tulsa, Oklahoma; and The Vampire Bat - Special Edition - staring Lionel Atwill and Fay Wray, this 1933 horror flick is newly restored from 35mm elements and looks great. New Reviews: Donnie Darko, Hidden Figures, and The Handmaid's Tale
Donnie Darko: Limited Edition Check out the latest reviews that have been entered into the DVD Talk Review Database including: Donnie Darko: Limited Edition - an ambitious and genre-bending slice of science-fiction, fantasy, and drama, Richard Kelly's film holds up perfectly well 15 years later and will likely endure for several more decades; Hidden Figures - tells a fascinating story from NASA’s history and is helped along by very good performances by just about everyone; and The Handmaid's Tale - far from feeling dated, this underrated piece of speculative fiction is now more uncannily in-sync with the times than when it was originally released. TV on DVD: Archer, Veep, and Silicon Valley
Archer: Season 7 TV on DVD and Blu-ray remains very popular with more and more favorites being released. New TV reviews include: Archer: Season 7 - this season brings Sterling Archer back into more of his spy realm for longtime fans and admirers of the show, but it isn't up to past ones; Veep: The Complete Fifth Season - the show was in the zone this season, possibly their best to date; and Silicon Valley: The Complete Third Season - the show remains hugely entertaining, thanks to a fantastic cast, enjoyable characters and a storyline that's satisfyingly well-crafted. Notable Releases: Split, House, and Ludwig
Split Several great movies and programs have come out recently, including a few that shouldn't be missed: Split - M. Night Shyamalan take a step back in the right direction with this film that builds an enormous amount of suspense at unexpected moments and remains unsettling despite its admittedly ridiculous premise; House: Two Stories - both movies remain plenty entertaining and the presentation here, along with the extras, is impressive; and Ludwig - Luchino Visconti's movie has its flaws to be certain but Helmet Burger is great in the titular lead role and the film really is a feast for the eyes. New Reviews: Kiss of Death, The Delinquents, and Ride The High Country
Kiss of Death (1947) Some cool discs have been reviewed over the past week. Check out these recent entries: Kiss of Death (1947) - a great new restoration of a film noir classic... Richard Widmark's gleeful psychopath is iconic and unforgettable, while Victor Mature's soulful lead performance proves he was more than just a handsome beefcake; The Delinquents - director Robert Altman’s first feature istechnically proficient, mostly well-acted, and definitely not the exploitation "B" its title and lurid advertising suggests; and Ride The High Country - an early gem by a director Sam Peckinpah, this film is a solid Western with terrific performances, very little fat, and a memorable score by George Bassman. TV on DVD: For the Love of Spock, The Americans, and The Love Boat
For the Love of Spock Some great TV shows have made their way onto home video recently including: For the Love of Spock - an entertaining and worthwhile feature about both about the iconic character and the actor who played him for nearly half a century; The Americans Season 4 - the ensemble cast continues to elevate their work and those who get increased focus deliver as well; and The Love Boat: Season Three, Volume Two - more entertaining than one might remember, this show is enjoyable fluff that is nicely executed. Paterson Several great movies and programs have come out recently, including a few that shouldn't be missed: Paterson - Jim Jarmusch's new film is Simple, sweet, and surprisingly magical… a warmhearted tribute to everyday creativity; Three - this movie takes its time to get going but once it does, the payoff is pretty nuts; and Chamber of Horrors - an all-sizzle, no-steak almost horror-mystery starring Leslie Banks and Lilli Palmer. How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying Our reviewers have been busy this week, filling the DVD Talk Review Database more great entries. Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXXVIII
Some great TV shows have made their way onto home video recently including: Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXXVIII - there is a lot of fun to be had in this collection of four 'Mike' episodes; Tales Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Super Shredder - this reboot is now entering its fifth and final season and while the recent shift in tone doesn't always feel like a step in the right direction, it's still got some gas left in the tank; and Attack on Titan: Complete Season One - this show about angst-ridden teenagers fighting for their survival is every bit the game changer its rapid fan base claims. Silence (2016) Several great movies and programs have come out recently, including a few that shouldn't be missed: Silence (2016) - Martin Scorsese's film is a complex, impressive drama about Jesuit priests who travel to 17th Century Japan to find their mentor and spread the gospel at great personal risk; Blow-Up - surreal, often methodical and gorgeously filmed, this movie is undoubtedly the work of a master artist, complete with a vagueness that leaves it open for interpretation; and 20th Century Women - a thoughtful, entertaining, and nostalgic look at the changing times of the 1970's.
