New Movie Reviews: Tropic Thunder, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Mirrors
Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. are soldiers fighting a fake war in the superb Hollywood blockbuster satire Tropic Thunder. DVD Talk critics Brian Orndorf and Jamie S. Rich explore the new comedy. Star Wars moves to the animated world with the action spectacle The Clone Wars. And Kiefer Sutherland declares war on his reflection in the horror film Mirrors. TV on DVD: Big Bang Theory, Love Boat, and Phoenix
The Big Bang Theory - The Complete First Season More TV shows are being released on DVD, and DVDTalk has them covered. Recent titles include: The Big Bang Theory - The 1st Season - a non-stop experience of laughter that's laced with small touches of love; Love Boat: Season One, Volume Two - a feather-light little confection, expertly conceived and executed, with a good cast and a well-meaning intention: to entertain; and Phoenix - a drama from South Korea that is at the top of its game. It is must see for K-drama fans and will also serve as great introduction for newcomers to the genre. DVD Savant: Top Gun, Pete Seeger, and Lawrence Jordan
Top Gun [Blu-ray] This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Top Gun [Blu-ray] - Tom Cruise distilled his essential star appeal in this flashy Valentine to Navy enlistment; Pete Seeger: The Power of Song - Inspirational and patriotic are words that come to mind in this docu-bio of America's foremost folk balladeer. With excellent film clips, music and photo resources; and The Lawrence Jordan Album - A four-disc compendium of artist Lawrence Jordan's animations and live-action art films, including a two-hour, three part feature about a poet wandering in Greek tourist locales and meditating in San Francisco. Recently Announced DVDs: Iron Man, Transformers, and H. P. Lovecraft
Iron Man (Two-Disc Special Collectors' Edition) Some notable titles have been announced recently by the studios. Make note of the following release dates: Iron Man Two-Disc Special Collectors' Edition the first big blockbuster of the 2008 summer gets that deluxe treatment when it's released on 9-30-08. It will be released on both DVD and Blu-ray; the Michael Bay robot extravaganza Transformers will make its way to Blu-ray in a two-disc set on 9-2-08; and fans of short horror films will want to note October 28th. That's when Microcinema will release The H.P. Lovecraft Collection, Vol. 5: Strange Aeons, The Edgar Allan Poe Collection Vol. 1 Annabel Lee and Other Tales of Mystery and Imagination, and Weird Tale Collection, Vol. 1: The Yellow Sign and Others; Other newly announced titles include: Scrubs Season Seven 11-11-2008, Futurama: Bender's Game 11-04-2008 and the quirky 70's sci-fi TV comedy Quark 9-15-08

This Week's Notable DVDs: South Park, Larisa Shepitko, and Prison Break
South Park: The Complete Eleventh Season Make room on the DVD shelf, there's more titles being released this week. Notable discs include:  South Park: The Complete Eleventh Season [review] - one of the best seasons that the series has to offer; Larisa Shepitko: Eclipse Series 11 [review] - A true artist who had deftly used the Soviet film industry to make statements both personal and universal, Shepitko remains one of the greatest unsung filmmakers of all time; and Prison Break Season Three - Michael Scofield finds himself once again imprisoned – but this time in a Panamonian Prison without rules and without guards.; Other releases of note include:  The Wire - The Complete Fifth Season, Brand Upon the Brain! - Criterion Collection [review] and Smart People. New DVD Reviews: Forbidden Zone, Dancing Outlaw, and Andre Techine
Forbidden Zone in Color This week saw some interesting new entries into the DVD Talk Review Database, especially if you're looking for some excellent films that haven't received a lot of press. Reviews of note include: Forbidden Zone in Color - This wacked out wonder is easily one of the greatest underground films of all time, and this latest incarnation is a winner as well; Dancing Outlaw (Limited Edition) - at times hilarious, at other times quite heart breaking, this film is consistently fascinating; and The Andre Techine Boxset - one of the most sensual yet thought-provoking contemporary French directors whose work never disappoints.
