TV on DVD remains very popular with more and more favorites being released. New TV reviews include: Inside Amy Schumer: Seasons One & Two - a tremendously funny show that's loaded with big laughs and refreshingly light on potholes; Case Histories: Complete Collection - a good private eye series based on novels and characters created by Kate Atkinson, it tells the story of an ex-soldier/ex-cop turned private investigator struggling with family problems and haunted by memories of the death of a young woman; and Hill Street Blues: Season 4 - season four found the show cresting at the highest possible peak of an already large wave, and it was breathtaking to enjoy the ride. This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: The Friends of Eddie Coyle - Robert Mitchum is superb as an aging Boston hood who turns squealer in hopes of avoiding a prison term. Unfortunately, the ruthless web of deceit and informing in the Beantown underworld puts him at a lethal disadvantage; Hoop Dreams - Three filmmakers followed two disadvantaged Chicago neighborhood boys for five years, as they pursued their goal of becoming big-time NBA basketball players; and The Way Things Go - A pair of Swiss artists / mechanics / chemical engineers fashion an astonishingly varied and intricate Rube Goldberg machine that takes a full thirty minutes to play out. Some great discs are being released this week. Check out these new movies: The Babadook [review] - one of 2014's best horror films featuring an insidiously terrifying idea by writer / director Jennifer Kent and a spectacular lead performance in Essie Davis... it's a terrifying and unique movie; Sullivan's Travels [review] - a sharply written and executed comedy classic from writer/director Preston Sturges, the film is a heartfelt masterpiece about our ability to laugh and make others laugh; and Joe 90: The Complete Series [review] - another fun Gerry Anderson Supermarionation show, it's easy to see why '60s kids were enthralled by the slicked-up adventures of a boy spy who vanquished enemies with a host of cool props and vehicles. Other reviews of note include: Carrie / The Rage: Carrie 2 [review], Class of 1984 [review], and Tales of Terror [review]. This week the DVD Talk Review Database has some great new entries, including a few discs you may have overlooked. Recent DVD reviews include: Empire Records - There's nothing but good intentions coursing through this film about a cluster of eccentric, music-loving employees who bond between the walls of a record store; The Wicked Lady - a pleasant surprise, it's campy fun, boasting an excellent cast of seasoned British players with Faye Dunaway's overwrought centerpiece entertainingly villainous; and Together Brothers - a watchable slice of mid-1970s drama - it feels like a blaxploitation film on the surface but this production was definitely made with a broader audience appeal in mind.
