This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night - Iranian-American writer-director Ana Lily Amirpour pours on the style and attitude, with this tale of an Iranian vampire and comes up with a highly personal, mysteriously likeable genre hybrid; 42nd Street - the latest WB vintage restoration completely refurbishes this bottom-of-the-Depression classic, giving it a visual shine and clarion soundtrack that seem brand new; and Inherent Vice - Paul Thomas Anderson channels Thomas Pynchon and comes up with remarkably witty, inventive and surprising period / genre hybrid that will be cherished by those that 'get' it. Another banner week for DVDs with the studios releasing some great films and boxed sets such as: The Friends of Eddie Coyle [review] - a thoughtful and smart classic that should adorn the Blu-ray shelf of every fan of crime dramas; Hollywood Shuffle [review] - Robert Townsend and his ensemble cast make this mixture of narrative and sketch comedy an irresistible and thoughtful treat; and From a Whisper to a Scream [review] - One of the greatest horror anthologies to emerge from the 1980s, this film has been lavished with a hell of a special edition on Blu-ray.
