TV on DVD: Death Valley Days and Hee Haw
Death Valley Days Complete First Season TV on DVD and Blu-ray remains very popular with more and more favorites being released. New TV reviews include: Death Valley Days Complete First Season - the Old Ranger narrates supposedly true stories of the Old West in this worthwhile series that still holds up most of the time; and Hee Haw: The Collector's Edition - while the jokes may be too corny for some to handle, fans of the long-running program will be pleased with this 14 DVD collection from Time/Life. Notable Releases: Microcosmos, The Expendables, and Caltiki, The Immortal Monster
Microcosmos Another banner week for home video with the studios releasing some great films and boxed sets such as: Microcosmos - a visually stunning and captivating glimpse into the insect world, this film is a hallmark in both the nature and (essentially) non-narrative documentary genre; The Expendables 4K Ultra HD - the 4K version of this high octane action film is entirely faithful to the source, the audio is absolutely explosive, and the supplements are pretty awesome; and Caltiki, The Immortal Monster - a terrific sci-fi horror thriller… an overachieving 'something made from nothing' epic that boosted director Mario Bava's reputation in the Italian film industry. New Reviews: The Scar, Vitaphone Varieties, and The Founder
The Scar Some great DVD and Blu-ray reviews have been added to the the DVD Talk Review Database recently including: The Scar - a solid noir thriller aided by a strong cast and some absolutely gorgeous cinematography… the film offers Paul Henreid a chance to play a noticeably darker role than most will associate with him but he does it very well while Joan Bennett steals almost every scene she's in; Vitaphone Varieties Volume Three - there is a lot to like in this collection of shorts from the early days of sound: quality music, oddball novelty acts, and everything in between; and The Founder - this biopic on Ray Kroc, a key figure behind the rise of the McDonald's franchise, is a story about friendships and collaborations that break, sometimes in the face of national and international successes.
