TV Reviews: Teen Titans, The Simpsons, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Teen Titans: The Complete First Season Some great TV shows have made their way onto home video recently including: Teen Titans: The Complete First Season - a quality program that gels humor with action and suspense, all while fleshing out its characters in a way that makes them relatable to audiences of all ages; The Simpsons - The Eighteenth Season - though the show has been in steady creative decline for a number of years, nearly every episode still offers at least one big belly laugh, and some of the episodes in that set are quite funny throughout; and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: The Complete Second Season - this season raises the stakes for Rebecca, introduces or expands roles for several fun characters, and takes the story in an enjoyable direction. Notable Releases: Matinee, The Sword and the Claw, and My Neighbors the Yamadas
Matinee Some pretty cool discs have made their way to store shelves over the past couple of weeks. Check out these new titles: Matinee - John Goodman shines in the lead and the supporting cast also does great work in this Joe Dante film is a love letter to late fifties/early sixties B-movies and the often times quirky characters that brought them to us; The Sword and the Claw - this disc includes a second film, The Brawl Busters, and both features are enjoyable on their own terms, incredible even, and nearly indescribable, a perfect double-bill for a Saturday night with a gaggle of receptive friends; and My Neighbors the Yamadas - a decidedly different adventure from Studio Ghibli, it is a light and enjoyable diversion that kids of all ages should enjoy. New Reviews: It, One Million B.C., and Battle of the Sexes
It Some cool discs have been reviewed over the past week. Check out these recent entries: It - Andy Muschietti's adaptation of Stephen King's book isn't perfect, but it is very good… the cast is solid, Pennywise is at times genuinely frightening and there's a lot of good character development to anchor the story quite nicely; One Million B.C. - an ambitious novelty film about cavemen and dinosaurs, packed to the gills with elaborate special effects… the movie is loads of fun; and Battle of the Sexes - a dramatic retelling of the cultural touchstone that was the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Rigg.
