2002 was a fantastic year for DVD. As with years past we turned to our DVD Talk Reviewers to each come up with their list for the best DVDs of 2002. There are some definite common threads which run through their top DVD lists:
The Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition This monster of a DVD made its way on to several of our reviewer's Top 10 lists and for a good reason: it was simply one of the best (if not THE BEST) DVDs of 2002. We'd seen other Director's go back and re cut their films for DVD (see Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace and Pearl Harbor - Vista Series Directors Cut) but none of them as well as The Lord of The Rings. The Supplemental disc is a virtual encyclopedia of information and will change the way you look at this move. Simply AMAZING!
Pulp Fiction, True Romance, Reservoir Dogs and Jackie Brown 2002 was a banner year for Quentin Tarantino with all 3 of his major Directorial films make it on to top DVDs lists along side True Romance which he wrote. Buena Visa did a bang up job on the two Tarantino crown jewels Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown giving fans everything they wanted and more. Reservoir Dogs caused a stir with it's technical aspects, but the features were there to make it a home run and Warner Bros gets great kudos for giving True Romance the kind of treatment they reserve for much 'bigger' films.
Singin' in the Rain
and Warner's Showing in The Top DVDs Lists Of all the DVDs Warner Bros. released in 2002, it was Singin' in the Rain which caught the most of our reviewer's attention. A stunning restoration Singin' in the Rain sets a new standard for preserving classic movies on DVD. Warner's 2 Disc Special Edition strategy paid off quite well in 2002 with many of the DVDs in this line making our top DVDs lists including: True Romance - Unrated Director's Cut, Unforgiven, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus Director's Cut. In 2002 Warner Bros. proved that 'catalog title' wasn't a dirty word and that a great film, no matter when it was made, can make a great DVD. Notably absent from ANY of our reviewers top DVDs list was Warner Bros. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone a great movie on a less than great DVD. Lesson learned - Don't make things impossible to find on a DVD, unless you're Chris Nolan (Yes Memento:LE did make at least 1 Reviewers Top DVD list).
