D-VHS

JVC along with Dreamworks, Fox, Universal and Artisan announced a bold new platform for Digital Entertainment: D-VHS or 'Digital' VHS. Yep that's right, some of the 'brightest' minds in entertainment want to try to convince you that going back to tape will improve your entertainment experience.

It doesn't take a swami to see that D-VHS is going to be D-OA! Although Dreamworks, Fox and Universal are supporting D-VHS, 2 huge studios: Warner Bros. and Columbia Tri-Star aren't. And with the first (and only) player on the market, priced at $1,999, it's hard to imagine who exactly is going to buy one of these things.

To add to the pot, D-VHS is aimed at High Definition TV owners, who at this time number shy of 2 million. Combine the high price, lack of support by some of the major studios, slow adoption of HD-TV and you've got the next BetaMax (which will in the end probably have sold more units that JVC will of D-VHS!)
