New Movie Reviews: Big Fan, Taking Woodstock, and The September Issue
Comedian Patton Oswalt takes to dramatics as an obsessive sports nut in the psychological chiller Big Fan. Ang Lee takes audiences back to 1969 to witness the birth of a cultural event in Taking Woodstock. DVD Talk critics Brian Orndorf and Jamie S. Rich jump into the mud. And Anna Wintour and the pages of Vogue magazine are revealed in the documentary The September Issue. Also in theaters: Asperger’s Syndrome is handed the googly eye treatment in the romance Adam. Be sure to catch reviews of other recent Theatrical Films: Inglourious Basterds, World’s Greatest Dad, Zombie Girl: The Movie, Post Grad, Shorts, District 9, The Time Traveler’s Wife, Thirst, Julie & Julia, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, (500) Days of Summer, and G.I. Recently Announced Discs: Forrest Gump, Mission: Impossible, and Fight Club
Forrest Gump I'll spare everyone the lame "box of chocolates" joke and just pass on the information that Forrest Gump is going to be released on Blu-ray on November 3rd. I encourage others in the news media to show the same restraint. The seventh and final season of the classic show Mission: Impossible will also hit the shelves November 3rd. And at the the risk of breaking the first rule (and the second one too, come to think of it,) I'll pass on the news that Fight Club will be arriving on Blu-ray on November 17th. Keep track of all the upcoming releases with the DVDTalk Release List.

DVD Savant: Last Starfighter, Gaumont Treasures, Bardelys the Magnificent
The Last Starfighter This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: The Last Starfighter [Blu-ray] - This 25th Anniversary Edition looks great, and contains an interesting documentary on the film's pioneering digital effects, all of which were done on a giant 1983 Cray computer; Gaumont Treasures 1897-1913 - A wonderfully-preserved selection of great pictures by Alice Guy, Louis Feuillade and Léonce Perret. The films range from 30 seconds to fifty minutes; many are "accidental" travelogues of turn-of-the-century France; and Bardelys the Magnificent / Monte Cristo - The dashing John Gilbert takes center stage in an impressive rediscovered and restored silent swashbuckler directed by King Vidor. Paired with a well-done 1922 version of Monte Cristo, as in "The Count of...". Excellent film history from Flicker Alley. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
