There have been a lot of really good films released this summer. Check out some of these movies that come highly recommended: The Martian (3D) - Ridley Scott's best film in years and though this feature won't win any points for originality, it earns many of them back in entertainment value; Pawn Sacrifice - a fine film, a good biography, but not special enough to stand on its own as an Oscar-winner; and The Green Inferno - Eli Roth's cannibal film is disgusting, terrifying, and consistently entertaining and its guarantee that audiences will never find themselves bored. Other recent films include: Inside Out, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Straight Outta Compton, and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. This week several great movies are coming out, including a few that shouldn't be missed: Christine [review] - John Carpenter's film plays most of its cards exactly right to create the most believable "high school nerd gets possessed by a demonic car" movie possible; The Bear: 25th Anniversary Collector's Edition [review] - brisk, accessible, and completely committed to its visceral narrative, Jean-Jacques Annaud's The Bear is a timeless family film that's easy to get lost in; and The Connection [review] - a flip side of sorts to William Friedkin's classic The French Connection, this is a crime film that mixes love of its era and some understated moments of melancholy with a breathtaking backdrop. Some cool discs have been reviewed over the past week. Check out these recent entries: The Satan Bug - at long last director John Sturges's film can at last be appreciated as the above-average science fiction thriller that it is; Billy Two Hats - a very fine, character-driven film boasting excellent performances by Gregory Peck, Desi Arnaz, Jr., and Jack Warden; and Dressed to Kill - Brian De Palma's Hitchcockian thriller is a slick and sleazy thriller with some great performances and style to spare.
