Notable Releases: The Philadelphia Story, Ingrid Goes West, and The Mercenary
The Philadelphia Story: Criterion Collection Several great movies and programs have come out recently, including a few that shouldn't be missed: The Philadelphia Story: Criterion Collection - still a very enjoyable comedy more than 75 years after its release, largely due to George Cukor's direction, a star-studded cast, and the popular source material it was skillfully based upon; Ingrid Goes West - this movie leverages how engaging Aubrey Plaza is and turns the film into a bit of a showcase for her while gently warning the viewer on the dangers of social media in the modern age; and The Mercenary - aka A Professional Gun - top notch entertainment… a gritty Spaghetti Western helmed by one of the best directors to work in the genre and played by a very game cast. New Reviews: Rock-a-Doodle, The Love of a Woman, and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Rock-a-Doodle Our reviewers have been busy this week, filling the DVD Talk Review Database more great entries. Some new reviews of note include: Rock-a-Doodle - in the pantheon of movies about a sorcerous, organist owl transforming a little boy into a cartoon kitten who in turn sets out to track down Rooster Elvis, no one -- and I mean no one -- has done it better than Rock-a-Doodle; The Love of a Woman - a gorgeous little film that offers a low-key portrait of life in a small seaside town, flavored with some Douglas Sirk-style melodrama; and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - essentially the very first Studio Ghibli film, this movie continues to withstand the test of time, whether we're talking about its visual language, the themes it employs, or the enduring strength of its heroine.
