DVD Savant: Carla's Song, 1776, and The First Deadly Sin
Carla's Song This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Carla's Song -Ken Loach extends his social realist concern internationally when a Glasgow bus driver (Robert Carlyle) falls in love with a street dancer (Oyanka Cabezas) and follows her halfway across the globe to Nicaragua -- and into the middle of Reagan's Contra War; 1776 - Peter Hunt's cheerful Broadway musical adaptation is basic U.S. history that makes the bewigged18th century John Adams, Ben Franklin and Tom Jefferson amusing and clever, and the jokes aren't so corny as to cheapen things; and The First Deadly Sin - Frank Sinatra's final feature film is a surprisingly sensitive, humanistic and low-key drama -- with its main plot centered on a vicious serial killer. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

This Week's Notable Releases: The Nanny, Island of Death, and Erik the Viking
The Nanny: The Complete Series There are a few new releases this week that you won't want to miss. Check out these hot titles: The Nanny: The Complete Series [review] - One of the classic sitcoms of the ‘90s, this show remained entertaining until the end and is compulsively re-watchable; Island of Death [review] - for discerning sleaze enthusiasts this is exploitation film-making at its finest; and Erik the Viking [review] - Terry Jones's film is a pleasantly cracked adventure picture, led by a charmingly goofy Tim Robbins and a crew of hard-working British comic character actors. Other reviews of note include: Kings of the Sun [review], River of Death [review], and Revenge of the Ninja [review]. Be sure to check out our DVD Talk Review Database for all the latest reviews including an entire section devoted to reviews of DVDs out this week.

Goodfellas: 25th Anniversary Edition Our reviewers have been busy this week, filling the DVD Talk Review Database more great entries. Some new reviews of note include: Goodfellas: 25th Anniversary Edition - this epic tale of power, pulp, and paranoia still packs a punch and remains one of director Martin Scorsese's greatest works; Limelight: Criterion Collection -a testament to Charlie Chaplin's clarity of vision as both a director and actor that he takes what could have just been a self-serving wallow in the mind of a merry-maker and transforms it into a truly touching, resonant story; and Wet Hot American Summer - a film that's got a silly sense of humor and a healthy cult following... you'll enjoy the highly-quotable summertime shenanigans in this film. Other recent reviews include: Frankenstein's Hungry Dead, Thank Your Lucky Stars, and An Eye for an Eye.  Visit the DVD Talk Review Database for all the latest reviews including an entire section devoted to reviews of DVDs out this week.

DVD Savant: It! The Terror from Beyond Space, Ladyhawke, and The Beyond
It! The Terror from Beyond Space This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: It! The Terror from Beyond Space - Edward L. Cahn's micro-budgeted space suspense tale is a well done tale of astronauts fighting a monster in the confines of their tiny spaceship; Ladyhawke - Richard Donner and story writer Edward Khmara energize this medieval fantasy with a high-concept idea worthy of a classic fairy tale; and The Beyond - It's gross, it's disgusting, it has little or no redeeming social content, but Savant responds to the way the story looks and the way it's told -- building an uncanny mood is to be commended, and the payoff does indeed make us feel as if we've stepped beyond some weird barrier in the mind. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

Michael Collins This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Michael Collins - Neil Jordan's epic looks at a great man central to Ireland's history and Liam Neeson is better than perfect to play the rebel-revolutionary who forced England to the bargaining table after 700 years of domination; The Premature Burial - Roger Corman's solitary non-Vincent Price Poe feature doesn't get half the love it deserves, but this HD presentation is a vast improvement on earlier home video editions; and Richard III - Ian McKellen co-wrote and stars in a wildly imaginative, visually energized version of Shakespeare's play, relocating the action to a fantasy fascist England in the 1930s.
