Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise fly high again in J.J. Abrams's spirited reboot of the all-holy sci-fi franchise Star Trek. DVD Talk critics Brian Orndorf, Jamie S. Some great TV shows have made their way onto DVD this week including:  X-Men, Volume 1 - Great voice acting, intelligent, well-paced storytelling, and good old-fashioned comic book action make this series a must-own for X-Men fans; Connections 1 - an excellent documentary series that is engaging, intelligent, entertaining, and most of all thought provoking; and The Dana Carvey Show - a go-for-broke comedy skit show that wins us over on its bravura, and even the dated stuff still feels fresh. This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Plague Town [Blu-ray] - Mutants roam the nighttime mist in a superior tale of terror -- mixing over-the-top gore with unexpected scenes of creeping dread. 70s horror thrills return in Dark Sky's production, directed by David Gregory; Danton - Andrzej Wajda filters Polish politics through a Polish-French "intimate spectacle" about the clash between Georges Danton and Robespierre during the Reign of Terror. Excellent history and drama; great performances by Gérard Depardieu and Wojciech Pszoniak; and Frost/Nixon [Blu-ray] - Ron Howard's film version of Peter Morgan's play is an entertaining show with a strange non-committal attitude about the controversial president. Some exciting titles have recently been announced including: Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series - the incredibly popular Sci-Fi Channel original show gets the complete series treatment on DVD and Blu-ray this eagerly awaited set will hit shelves on 7-28-09; The impressive animated documentary Waltz With Bashir will also be released on DVD and Blu-ray on 6-23-09; and tweens will be excited that Jonas Brothers: The Concert Experience will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on 6-30-09. Another banner week for DVDs with the studios releasing some great films and boxed sets such as: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - earning multiple Oscar nominations, this movie of a man (Brad Pitt) who ages in reverse was one of the must-see films of 2008; Grease (Blu-ray) [review] - a cinematic and musical staple, its timeless music and dance are wildly infectious; and That Girl - Season Five [review] - a sharply-written, warmly funny sitcom featuring two pros uniquely suited to each other's chemistry.
