DVD Savant: Wayne's World, Science is Fiction, and Paycheck
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Wayne's World [Blu-ray] - A good test of essential coolness: seventeen years later, are Wayne and Garth still cool? The movie itself has kept fairly fresh; Science is Fiction: 23 Films by Jean Painlevé - A fascinating career on film -- a French film director created unusual nature and science studies -- influenced by the Avant-Garde movement! Great science and fine art in one package. With other odd Painlevé films, like a 30's color stop-motion animation operetta; and Paycheck [Blu-ray] - The premise of this Sci-Fi thriller is rather ambitious (the source is a Philip K. Dick story) but John Woo turns much of it into standard action escapism: see men point guns at each other's heads! Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
Check out some of the great new titles that have been announced including: Green Lantern: First Flight - DC Comic's Emerald Avenger will be flying onto screens on 7-28-09 on both DVD and Blu-ray; The first season of the Dennis Hopper-led series Crash, based on the movie of the same name, will also be released on DVD and Blu-ray on 8-25-09; and the latest Drew Barrymore romantic comedy He's Just Not That Into You will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on 6-2-09. Keep track of all the upcoming DVDs with the DVDTalk Release List.

DVDTalk's 2009 Tribeca Film Festival Roundup
DVDTalk's Jason Bailey has spent the better part of the last two weeks losing sleep, eating irregular meals, and blogging from his cell phone all in order to catch as many movies as possible at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. He managed to take in 30 features, including Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience, unexpectedly daring and immensely rewarding film; Outrage - an examination of the closeted hypocrisy of secretly-gay lawmakers; and In the Loop - a delightfully smart British comedy with James Gandolfini. Which flicks are must-sees and which ones "shouldn't [see] the light of a DVD laser, much less the screens of a reputable film festival like this one"? Check out Jason's wrap up of the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival.
Some great DVD reviews have been added to the the DVD
Talk Review Database recently, so many that it's hard to decide which ones to profile. Other recent reviews include: Alexandra, Empire of Passion - Criterion Collection, and Treasures From American Film Archives - Encore Edition. Visit the DVD Talk Review Database for all the latest reviews including an entire section devoted to reviews of DVDs out this week.
