New Movie Reviews: Date Night, Black Waters of Echo's Pond, and The Runaways
Steve Carell and Tina Fey are a married couple on the run from danger in the action comedy Date Night. Read reviews from Brian Orndorf and Tyler Foster. It's all demons and board games in the horror film The Black Waters of Echo's Pond. And Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning storm the music scene as The Runaways. Book Talk: Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, Dracula, and David Lynch
Frankenstein Welcome to another (and overdue) installment of Book Talk. This time around we have a bit of an eclectic set of books to cover. First DVDTalk writer Casey Burchby has a review of a collection of David Lynch interviews that will sure to please fans of the fascinating director. Then John Sinnott covers a pair of books about monsters. The Wolf Man vs. Dracula is a script that was written in 1944 at Universal for a Technicolor film but never made it past the preliminary planning stage. Next he reviews Edison's Frankenstein, a comprehensive look at the long thought missing silent film. TV on DVD: Breaking Bad, Matt Houston, and Designing Women
Breaking Bad: The Complete Second Season TV on DVD remains very popular with more and more favorites being released. New TV reviews include: Breaking Bad: The Complete Second Season - it may not be the cheeriest show on television, it certainly is the most engrossing; Matt Houston: The First Season - this Aaron Spelling show is quintessential 80s escapism; and Designing Women: Season Three - another outstanding effort that combines intelligence and insanity with smart scripts and passionate performances. Recently Announced Discs: Avatar, The Wolfman, and Bob Hope
Avatar Some excellent titles have been announced recently including: Avatar on DVD and Blu-ray - James Cameron's animated blockbuster comes to home video on 4/22/10. Unfortunately it won't be in 3D; The Wolfman (2010) on DVD and Blu-ray - Benicio Del Toro steps into Lon Chaney Jr's shoes (and paws) when he takes on the role of Lawrence Talbot in this 2010 remake of the 1941 classic. Pick it up on 6/1/10; and Bob Hope: Thanks for the Memories Collection on DVD - Six Hope films, three of which are new to DVD including the 1939 version of The Cat and the Canary. DVD Savant: Yojimbo/ Sanjuro, Tribute to a Bad Man, and Mr. Fox
Yojimbo / Sanjuro This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Yojimbo / Sanjuro - Akira Kurosawa's twin Samurai adventures -- comic, bloody and cynical -- bounce back in Blu-ray. it's Toshiro Mifune in HD!; Tribute to a Bad Man - Montana horse rancher James Cagney gets it in mind that he can hang every horse thief he catches. Cigareet-smoking Irene Papas doesn't think so. Good drama, beautiful cinematography in Robert Wise's standout CinemaScope western; and Fantastic Mr. Fox - Wes Anderson's stop-motion comedy is different, funny and beautiful to look at... a new turn for animation. This Week's Notable DVDs: The Lord of the Rings, Sharpe's Peril, and Icons of Suspense
The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (Theatrical Editions) [Blu-ray] With one notable exception it's a bit of a slow week for new DVDs, though there are some new titles that might make it worth a trip to the video store. Check out these recent releases: The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy [Blu-ray] [review] - Peter Jackson's epic trilogy arrives on Blu-ray. Unfortunately only the theatrical versions are being released at this time, but even these slightly shorter versions are worth picking up; Sharpe's Peril [Blu-ray review] - Sean Bean returns to his role as a infantryman and adventurer in the King's Army in this latest installment in the long-running series; and Icons of Suspense: Hammer Films [DVD review] - Reaching further down into its vault of co-productions with England's Hammer Films, Sony collects five mystery thrillers and one science fiction masterpiece in this intriguing collection. Other releases of note include:  Party Down: Season 1 [DVD review], The Italian Straw Hat [DVD review], and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans [Blu-ray review]. Some new reviews of note include: A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) (Blu-ray) - Very Highly Recommended - every last one of its most ambitious scares are still devastatingly effective after a quarter-century; Nick Thune: Thick Noon - a smart, snarky, straight-faced comic who has come out of the gate swinging with this release; and Dread - one of those rare book to film adaptations that manages to capture the spirit and tone of the source material.
