DVD Savant: War of the Worlds, Animation Express, and Buster Keaton
War of the Worlds This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: War of the Worlds - Spielberg's "Iraq Occupation" version of the H.G. Wells classic is a tense narrative of humanity routed by an invasion from outer space. Superior in all respects, and it even has a good performance from Tom Cruise! The slightly-degraded images look razor sharp in Blu-ray; Animation Express - The National Film Board of Canada floors us with 39 dazzling animated mini-masterpieces, all in eye-popping Blu-ray. Includes the weird Madame Putli-Tutli, Ryan, the funny Sleeping Betty and the wonderful The Danish Poet; and Lost Keaton: Sixteen Comedy Shorts 1934-1937 - This two-disc set collects the "Educational Pictures" short subjects Buster Keaton starred in after his fall from top studio work. Great gags and some classic input by our favorite silent comedian, harnessed to low-budget productions. Excellent liner notes help make this essential for Keaton fans. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
