DVDTalk's Animation Challenge!
Animation Challenge It's almost time for DVDTalk's first Annual Animation Challenge! Join in on the fun and see how many animated movies, TV shows, and shorts you can watch over the month of August. Any and all types of animation are included: CGI, hand drawn, puppetry, and stop motion, just to name a few. The object is to view 100 movies but even if you set a much lower personal goal you're welcome to join. Did I mention that there are prizes too (given away at random amoung the participants.) TV on DVD: The Super Hero Squad Show, Will Ferrell, and Agatha Christie
The Super Hero Squad Show: Volume One TV on DVD remains very popular with more and more favorites being released. New TV reviews include: The Super Hero Squad Show: Volume One - this show is a lot of fun, whether you're a kid or an adult; Saturday Night Live: Best of Will Ferrell - Volume Three - with strong material that provides a lot of laugh, this is a good little slab of comedy to have in your collection; and The Agatha Christie Hour: Set 1 - a fascinating collection of adaptations of some of Christie's lesser-known short stories and sleuths. DVD Savant: Alibi Ike, Ozu, and The Girl-Getters
Alibi Ike This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Alibi Ike - Joe E. Brown wins ball games and woos Olivia de Havilland (in her first film) in this funny baseball comedy, with William Frawley, Roscoe Karns and a number of actual big league ball players. And wait 'til you see Brown's insane pitching style -- !; Two Films by Ozu - Yasujiro Ozu's first talking picture The Only Son and a wartime drama he made six years later, There Was a Father, are two similarly-themed masterpieces of parental sacrifice and commitment; and The Girl-Getters - Oliver Reed leads a pack of enterprising young men who use "The System" to sweep girls off their feet at a summer seashore resort. This Week's Notable DVDs: Clash of the Titans, Batman, and Poirot
Clash of the Titans Some pretty cool discs are being released this week. Check out these new titles: Clash of the Titans [review] - the remake of Ray Harryhausen's cult classic hits home video this week. 'nuff said; Batman: Under the Red Hood [review] - there hasn't been an animated Batman movie anywhere near this strong in a full decade; and Agatha Christie Poirot: The Movie Collection, Set 5 [review] - a trio of TV-movies staring David Suchet including the classic Murder on the Orient Express. New DVD Reviews: Brewster McCloud, A Prophet, and Film Noir Classics
Brewster McCloud This week the DVD Talk Review Database has some great new entries, including some discs you may have overlooked. Recent DVD reviews include: Brewster McCloud [2nd review]- a thoroughly enjoyable film that truly can't be compared to any other. Its eclectic cast and combination of satire, allegory, and parody are without peer; A Prophet - director Jacques Audiard is a filmmaker of force and skill and this is an outstanding film; and Film Noir Classic Collection, Vol. 5 - after a three year hiatus, WB continues their Noir Classics releases with this eight movie set.
