New Movie Reviews: Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Bellflower
James Franco gets his stinking paws on some damn dirty apes in the sci-fi prequel Rise of the Planet of the Apes. And a jobless slacker scratches his "Road Warrior" itch in the fiery indie Bellflower. Also in theaters: Rebecca De Mornay controls her brood of brutes in the remake Mother's Day. The saga of Uday Hussein's twin is dramatized in The Devil's Double. Ken Kesey returns in the documentary Magic Bus. And Rachel Weisz is The Whistleblower. TV on DVD: MST3K Vs. Gamera, MASK, and Sesame Street Spoofs
The Closer: The Complete Sixth Season Some great TV shows have made their way onto DVD this week including: MST3K Vs. Gamera - All five wonderfully irreverent Gamera episodes of MST... there's not a dud in the lot; MASK: The Complete Series - if you like action B-movies, there's 65 short ones in this set to enjoy; and Best of Sesame Spoofs 1&2 - There's a lot to enjoy in this two-hour set. The Short Films Collection 1920-1923 This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: The Blues Brothers - John Landis's all-star demolition derby musical is the perfect "vehicle" for Saturday Night Live stars John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd; Source Code - Duncan Jones tops his sci-fi show Moon with a smart and fast alternate-reality thriller about a man trying to stop the terror bombing of a train. ; and Trust - An intense family drama that takes on a serious topic: Internet sexual predators. This Week's Notable DVDs: Rio, Eastbound & Down, and Sands of The Kalahari
National Lampoon's Animal House This week several great movies are coming out, including a few that shouldn't be missed: Rio [DVD review] - an infectious, amusing adventure; Eastbound & Down [First Season review, Second Season review]- one of the more memorable cable comedies in recent memory; and Sands of The Kalahari [DVD review] - A smashing epic adventure, with complex characterizations and weird dynamics.
