Anime Talk: Sgt. Frog, Lupin, and More Manga
Anime Talk Last month's Anime Talk was jam-packed with reviews and snippets. In fact that was so much that we had to overflow our manga coverage in order to squeeze everything in! For our May installment things have quieted down a little on the anime front, (though we do cover the latest wacked out adventures of Sgt. New Movie Reviews: A Nightmare on Elm Street, Furry Vengeance, and Survival of the Dead
Horror icon Freddy Krueger returns to slash and quip in the glossy remake A Nightmare on Elm Street. Read reviews from Brian Orndorf and Tyler Foster. The Tribeca Film Festival: Week Two
The Trotsky The Tribeca Film Festival is entering its second week, and DVD Talk's wall-to-wall coverage continues. Our own Jason Bailey has already seen and reviewed 26 of the festival's feature film slate, including the French comedy Micmacs, from the director of Amelie; Jay Baruschel in the charming comedy The Trotsky; Rashida Jones and Chris Messina testing the limits of their Monogamy; Helen Hunt, Liev Schrieber, Eddie Izzard, and Carla Gugino in the domestic dramedy Every Day; Oscar winners Renee Zellweger and Forest Whitaker slumming in My Own Love Song; and the latest from Ed Burns, Nice Guy Johnny. Plenty of impressive documentaries have unspooled as well, including Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, Vidal Sassoon: The Movie, Alex Gibney's gripping My Trip to Al-Qaeda, and Visionaries, a tribute to avant-garde cinema. DVD Savant: "M", Two Seconds, and The TCM Classic Film Festival
M This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: "M" - Fritz Lang's masterpiece, one of the best movies of all time, jumps to life in this fine HD transfer, sharper and clearer than ever before. An entire new extra has been added, the simultaneously filmed English export version, with Peter Lorre emoting his famous final scene in English; Two Seconds - Edward G. Robinson relives a year of heartache and murder while strapped in to the Electric Chair. An overlooked dramatic gem with Robinson pulling out the stops in his full-bore performance; and TCM Classic Film Festival - The Savant attended the first TCM Classic Film Festival this past weekend and has complete coverage of all the films and guests. Recently Announced Discs: Shutter Island, Errol Flynn, and 30 Days
Shutter Island Some cool discs are going to be released in the near future. Check out these newly announced titles: Shutter Island on DVD and Blu-ray - director Martin Scorsese's suspense thriller will be hitting home video on 6/8/10; TCM Spotlight: Errol Flynn Adventures on DVD - Fans of the classic action star will by 'in like Flynn' when TCM and Warner's release 5 of his films on 8/3/10; and 30 Days: The Complete Series on DVD - Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) takes people and puts them in situations well outside their comfort zone for a month in this interesting TV show. This Week's Notable DVDs: Ride With the Devil, Doctor Parnassus, and It's Complicated
Avatar This week several great movies are coming out, including a few that shouldn't be missed: Ride With the Devil (The Criterion Collection) [DVD review, Blu-ray review] - Ang Lee's vibrant, character-driven adventure tells an unusual story while tussling with difficult, important themes; The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus [DVD review, Blu-ray review] - This movie was unfairly shuffled aside on theatrical release, but it's made for a strong life on DVD; and It's Complicated [Blu-ray review] - director Nancy Meyers' latest romantic comedy features an all-star cast including Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. Other releases of note include:  The Fugitive Kind - Criterion Collection [DVD review], Hong Kong Godfather [DVD review], and Dune [Blu-ray review]. New DVD Reviews: District 13: Ultimatum, The Baader Meinhof Complex, and Lake Mungo
District 13: Ultimatum Check out the latest DVD reviews that have been entered into the DVD Talk Review Database including: District 13: Ultimatum [DVD review, Blu-ray review] - Quibbles about plot holes are set aside given how much sheer, loopy fun has been crammed into this film; The Baader Meinhof Complex - a fantastic, visceral movie that will overwhelm the viewer with feelings of fear and oppression; and Lake Mungo - This is a superior effort, one that will keep you up at night. DVD Talk Interviews: James Van Der Beek, Floria Sigismond, and Sylvain White
Floria Sigismond DVDTalk writer Jack Giroux has been working overtime this past week and has a trio of interesting interviews. First he talks with James Van Der Beek about his latest film Formosa Betrayed.
