DVD Savant: A Star is Born, In the Mood, and More
A Star is Born This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: A Star is Born - Judy Garland's post-MGM triumph and one of the most entertaining musicals of the 50s is informed by its star's even more iconic personal story; In the Mood - A newspaper sideshow scandal from the WW2 home front was the story of Ellsworth "Sonny" Wisecarver, a 15-year old who ran off with not one but two older women, both of whom were married and both of whom testified to their undying love for him. Not a lame teen sex comedy, this show builds on its witty, romantic tone; and Word Is Out: Stories of Some Of Our Lives - The first and perhaps best documentary about the experience of Gays and Lesbians came from the 1970s, before the AIDS epidemic and before much of the country had even begun to consider alternate lifestyles as legitimate. The interviewees in this warm, funny and illuminating document are neighbors and friends, people trying to live ordinary lives. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

The Book of Eli This week several great movies are coming out, including a few that shouldn't be missed: The Book of Eli [Blu-ray review] - a gritty post-apocalyptic film that impresses with its dilapidated atmosphere and excellent performances from the actors; Unthinkable [Blu-ray review] - smart, well made, topical and disturbing; and Mystery Train [Blu-ray review] - Jim Jarmusch's most personable work is a masterwork of substance and the slightest stylistic support. It's not a total loss however.
