Planning a trip to the local multiplex this weekend? This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: All That Heaven Allows - Douglas Sirk does his stylistic overkill job on a straight soap opera about a lonely widow (Jane Wyman) who dares -- dares, I tell you -- fall in love with a younger man (Rock Hudson); What Price Hollywood? - This proto- trial run for A Star is Born hasn't molded the story and character elements into a full-on glamorous, romantic mold, but it's a much more interesting (and less phony) snapshot of the Hollywood scene; and Crack-Up - This utterly forgotten Fox picture stars Peter Lorre in a half-comic, half-menacing role as a mentally-impaired airport 'mascot' who in reality masterminds a network of vicious international spies. Some pretty cool discs are being released this week. Check out these new titles:A Hard Day's Night [review] - a timeless burst of energy in cinematic form, delivering fun in both the comedy and the Beatles' music; Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season Six [review] - this is an essential release featuring another jaw-dropping, frame-by-frame reconstruction of all 26 episodes and a wealth of new and archived extras; and Wolf Creek 2 [review] - with its manic pace and a preference for blood-spattered action over slow-burning sadism, this sequel eviscerates every last complaint about the original.
