New Movie Reviews: Elysium and Blue Jasmine
Elysium Check out DVDTalk's latest reviews of movies that are in theatrical release. This week's crop includes: Elysium, a 2nd review- latest in a surprising string of "our planet is doomed" science-fiction films, this isn't the masterpiece that some moviegoers were hoping for but it still manages to be a worthwhile feature; and Blue Jasmine - Cate Blanchett is remarkable as the frayed trophy wife losing her grip in the latest ethical drama from the ever-prolific Woody Allen. TV on DVD: Community, Damages, and Doctor Who
Community: The Complete Fourth Season More TV shows have made their way on to DVD, and DVD Talk has got them covered. Check out our reviews of the newest TV releases including: Community: The Complete Fourth Season - In this first season without the show's creator/executive producer Dan Harmon at the helm, the group finds itself on the verge of graduating from Greendale Community College, something they try to rectify; Damages: The Final Season - the legal drama-noirish thriller starring Glenn Close and Rose Byrne remains totally engrossing in its fifth and final season; and Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited 1-4 - This set collects one serial a piece for the first four men to step into the role of The Doctor, William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, John Pertwee and of course Tom Baker. If you're a fan and looking to sample some of the vintages serials but don't know where to start, this is a pretty solid collection of stories. The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell - Otto Preminger takes on the military establishment in this true story of a general who refused to stay silent about Army mismanagement; Terror on a Train - Rushed out to defuse a shipment of naval mines, industrial engineer Glenn Ford must somehow check out eleven freight cars stacked with the buggers, any one of which might have been tampered with... and he has only seven hours to get the job done; and Seconds - A depressed middle-aged businessman longs to escape from the loveless, dreary life he has made for himself -- and then makes contact with a mysterious organization that provides a new identity, a new appearance, and a new beginning -- for a price. This Week's Notable Releases: Oblivion, Robin Hood, and The Garden of Words
Oblivion There are some new titles coming out that might make it worth a trip to the video store this week. Check out these recent releases: Oblivion [review] - Director Joseph Kosinski intentionally created a film that pays tribute to earlier sci-fi classics... its visual effects and cinematography are excellent, and any story hiccups are overcome by the intriguing finale and fluid action; Robin Hood: 40th Anniversary Edition [review] - a fun, lightweight and unpretentious film that families can still enjoy featuring likable characters, plenty of laughs, a breezy plot and attractive animation; and The Garden of Words [review] - this visually sumptuous anime tells a simple, real-world story with a great sensitivity and attention to detail. Recent Reviews: Trance, Peggy Sue Got Married, and Niagara
Trance Our reviewers have been busy this week, filling the DVD Talk Review Database more great entries. Some new reviews of note include: Trance - James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson are all excellent in this film, which uses hypnotherapy as a plot device to help McAvoy find the location of a Goya painting he stole; Peggy Sue Got Married - Kathleen Turner's performance, John Barry's score, some good direction, and scattered scenes of powerful, truthful emotion make tis a movie worth seeing; and Niagara: 60th Anniversary Edition - Marilyn Monroe sizzles in this sexually potent, psychologically thrilling mix of melodrama and hardboiled action.
