DVD Savant: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Planet of the Vampires, and F for Fake
v This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - a sterling restoration, most of it from an original negative source... the expressionist sets and exaggerated makeups now look like they should and the effect is like seeing something wholly new; Planet of the Vampires - Mario Bava's science fiction opus is an eye-popping visual delight, as worried astronauts in black rubber spacesuits pick their way through the Maestro's eerie hellscape of rocks and colored smoke; and F for Fake - Orson Welles spends about ninety minutes teasing, tricking and flim-flamming the audience with this playful 'documentary' ostensibly about two hoaxters. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

This Week's Notable Releases: UHF, Demons, and Welcome to the Space Show
UHF Some pretty cool discs are being released this week. Check out these new titles: UHF [review] - the ridiculous comedy of UHF holds up very well 25 years after it first arrived, on the strength of "Weird" Al Yankovic's charm, an unusual and entertaining supporting cast and a shotgun approach to humor; Demons [review] - Synapse's new DVD boasts stunning A/V quality and the film is a blast... what more could you want?; and Welcome to the Space Show [review] - fans of animation will want to check out this movie just to see the sheer volume of visual and conceptual creativity on hand, which bursts from this film like a jack-in-the-box Other reviews of note include: Dolls [review], The Compleat Al [review], and Patema Inverted [review]. Be sure to check out our DVD Talk Review Database for all the latest reviews including an entire section devoted to reviews of DVDs out this week.

Recent Reviews: Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Los Angeles Plays Itself, and Mauvais Sang
Once Some cool discs have been reviewed over the past week. Check out these recent entries: Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - If you are a fan of the Tolkein films you are absolutely going to love this; Los Angeles Plays Itself - Thom Andersen's documentary consists of clips from various films that are edited together with narration to explore the evolving relationship between the American movie business and its well-known hometown... it is a masterpiece; and Mauvais Sang - writer-director Leos Carax's second feature is alternately madcap and muted, joyous and heartbreaking... a hell of a movie. Other recent reviews include: Letter to Momo, Boy Meets Girl (1984), and Eurocrime! The Italian Cop and Gangster Films That Ruled the 70s.  Visit the DVD Talk Review Database for all the latest reviews including an entire section devoted to reviews of DVDs out this week.
