DVD Savant: The St. Valentine's Day Massacre, The Night They Raided Minsky's, and Syncopation
The St. Valentine's Day Massacre This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: The St. Valentine's Day Massacre - Roger Corman's semi-doc approach to Al Capone's wipeout of the Bugs Moran outfit... Jason Robards doesn't look like Scarface but works up a righteous fury when killing men with razors and baseball bats; The Night They Raided Minsky's - Jason Robards and Norman Wisdom are Burlesque comics out to bed Britt Eklund, a virginal Amish girl who dances stories from the Bible; and Syncopation - This musical history of jazz is racially integrated, but its good intentions go only so far -- the music is great and the sentiment honest, but it's still a movie about black music told mostly from the viewpoint of white leads Bonita Granville and Jackie Cooper. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

Recent Reviews: Cartoon Roots, Nightcrawler, and All Neat in Black Stockings
Cartoon Roots Our reviewers have been busy this week, filling the DVD Talk Review Database more great entries. Some new reviews of note include: Cartoon Roots - The fifteen restored vintage animated shorts collected in this feature-packed set trace the period when animation matured from crude drawings on paper to the wild, jazzy early sound era; Nightcrawler - a film that takes you into the disturbed mind of a sociopath who finds his calling by filming the misery of others and selling it to a broadcast news station, ; and All Neat in Black Stockings - a brilliantly-realized drama that draws you further and further into its miserable, sad tale of a petty, cruel, empty purveyor of late '60s "anything goes" sexual ethos. Other recent reviews include: The Wild Angels, White Comanche, and Nekromantik 2.  Visit the DVD Talk Review Database for all the latest reviews including an entire section devoted to reviews of DVDs out this week.

DVD Savant: Kiss Me, Stupid, The Wild Angels, and Lust for Life
Don't Look Now This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Kiss Me, Stupid - Billy Wilder fell afoul of the Catholic Legion of Decency with this smutty fairy tale about a wife and a hooker trading places -- and discovering new truths about their narrow roles as women; The Wild Angels - Roger Corman goes wild and takes risks with this fairly respectable tale of the outlaw Hell's Angels biker gang of Venice, California; and Lust for Life - Vincente Minnelli and John Houseman drench this tale of that old psycho-genius Vincent Van Gogh with terrific production values -- perfect period déor, European locations and careful images of original paintings borrowed from museums and collectors. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

Fifty Shades of Grey Planning a trip to the local multiplex this weekend? Here are DVD Talk's reviews of the latest theatrical releases: Fifty Shades of Grey - a very different type of love story than we're used to seeing from Hollywood...; Paddington - an enjoyable film, one that you walk away from feeling good but also appreciating the effort that was put in to bringing this classic story to life; and Jupiter Ascending - a film that is pretty fun, though it dips and drags whenever any two characters speak more than five lines of dialogue. Other recent films include: Foxcatcher, Leviathan (2014), American Sniper, Inherent Vice, Into the Woods, The Imitation Game, Selma, Wild, The Babadook, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part I, Big Hero 6, Interstellar, The Theory of Everything, Birdman, Dracula Untold, Gone Girl. . DVD Savant: Don't Look Now, The Purple Rose of Cairo, and Nightcrawler
Don't Look Now This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Don't Look Now - Nicolas Roeg uses his signature splintered-time editorial patterns to enliven an intense suspense tale of ghosts and/or psychic synchronicity, but the real appeal is in the naturalistic, erotic marriage created between stars Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland; The Purple Rose of Cairo - Woody Allen's gentle ode to the dream world of Hollywood is one of his very best pictures, a fantasy-tragedy that remains funny and charming all the way through; and Nightcrawler - Jake Gyllenhaal creeps, and leaps, and glides and slides across Los Angeles pursuing a ghoulish profession in Dan Gilroy's refreshingly original tale of dead-of-night doings in the name of better gore for local TV. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

New TV reviews include: Boardwalk Empire: Season 5 - this final season wrapped up the show in the most fantastic, expectation-defying way possible; Big Driver - this made-for-TV movie is a ballsy, unapologetic rape revenge thriller, with that sick, patented Stephen King black humor; and Episodes: The Third Season - a solid, funny satire of Hollywood's tendency to turn everything it does into junk. The Black Scorpion This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: The Black Scorpion - Big bugs are bugging out all over, gobbling up cows and train passengers and tossing tanks and helicopters around like they were toy tanks and helicopters. Willis O'Brien's late career special effects are sensational, with fast-moving scorpion horrors skittering all over the landscape; The Palm Beach Story - Preston Sturges' wittiest comedy about romance between the ultra rich and those that wannabe is one inventive laugh after another with original characters in every scene; and Pork Chop Hill - Lewis Milestone's last war film is also Gregory Peck's effort to show that combat can be worse when politics require sacrifice without the possibility of victory. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
