DVD Talk Spotlight: Frederick Wiseman
Welfare Though indisputably one of the all-time great documentary filmmakers, Wiseman's mesmerizing, uniquely observational work has been as frustratingly elusive on home video as it is monumentally influential. Indeed, his famously controversial Titicut Follies was banned outright for three decades, for years accessible only to psychology students. But now nearly all of Wiseman's movies are at long last available on DVD through the director's own Zipporah Films website. Not sure where to start? We've got reviews of some of his most fascinating films, including High School, Meat, Law and Order, Welfare, State Legislature, and Domestic Violence.

La Chinoise This week we have a special giveaway from KOCH LORBER - two classics from Jean-Luc Godard now available for the first time on DVD. Extensive DVD extras include never-before-released interviews with Godard and Anne Wiazemsky, Venice Film Festival press conference footage and more. In Le Gai Savoir, two militants (Jean-Pierre Léaud and Juliet Berto) have a discourse on language inside an abandoned television studio. Enter now for your chance to win one of 5 sets of these two eagerly awaited, digitally restored films.

DVD Talk critics Brian Orndorf, Jamie S. Rich, and David Walker weigh in on the return of a screen icon. John Cusack makes a strong political statement and a semi-sequel to Grosse Pointe Blank with the outlandish War, Inc. The One That Got Away This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: The One That Got Away - Hardy Krüger is the downed German pilot who keeps escaping, no matter how the RAF prison keepers lock him up. Yul Brynner is Pancho Villa, Charles Bronson is a kill-happy rebel and Robert Mitchum a biplane pilot scouting for them against the federales. With Herbert Lom and Alexander Knox; and Baby It's You - John Sayles' coming of age drama is a superior oddball romance, between good girl Rosanna Arquette and bad boy Vincent Spano. Very worthwhile and unusual. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

DVD Savant: Fox Western Classics, Serial, and Death of a Cyclist
Fox Western Classics This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Fox Western Classics - An excellent and budget priced trio of great 50s' oaters -- a classic, a good suspense picture and a cult oddity blending weird landscapes with the music of Bernard Herrmann: The Gunfighter, Rawhide, Garden of Evil; Serial - A bawdy comedy from 1980 that assaults Marin County sexual libertarians with devastatingly funny jokes that don't quite add up to a coherent satire. Yet there's no denying that the farce has its good qualities -- mostly in its laugh quotient; and Death of a Cyclist - Juan Antonio Bardem's masterpiece uses Italian actors and resembles an American noir thriller, but concocts a specifically Spanish drama of class guilt and violent atonement. Starring Italian heartthrob Lucia Bosé.; Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
