DVD Savant: The Professionals, The Man Who Could Cheat Death, and Starting Out in the Evening
The Professionals - Blu-ray This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: The Professionals - Blu-ray - Richard Brooks takes the action picture by storm in this still-pleasing 'armed incursion' western. Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster, Woody Strode, Robert Ryan and Jack Palance are an unbeatable team, with Claudia Cardinale atop the cake for special appeal; The Man Who Could Cheat Death - Paramount wouldn't release it, so Legend Films licensed this classic-era Hammer horror show. Anton Diffring is the cheater and Hazel Court is in love with him; Christopher Lee is in there too; and Starting Out in the Evening - Frank Langella is an aging author who 'becomes involved' with a young literature hopeful interested in publicizing his work. On the obvious side but well acted and directed. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

HD Talk: The Top Blu-ray Discs
HD Talk This week HD Talk returns! It's been quite a while since we've had an installment of our High Definition column, and in that time a lot has changed. There's now only one HD format, and though the war is over, not a lot has changed in the HD world. This list isn't intended to be definitive, or to belittle the titles that aren't on here. Jericho: The Complete Second Season Classic cartoons, recent TV shows and new discs from both Miriam and Criterion are being released this week. No matter what you like to watch, you'll want to check out some of the new releases such as: Jericho: The Complete Second Season [review] The strength of the shows second season was how it evolved to become something decidedly different, preferring to build on what took place before rather than mimic it as so many other shows seem to do; Popeye the Sailor: 1938-1940, Vol. 2 [review] - a hilarious collection of thirty-one classic cartoons featuring amazing, innovative animation and a group of characters that remain as lovable today as they were back then; and Burn Notice - Season One [review]- Led by a potent cast and writing that's both hip and humorous it's hard to resist the charm of this addicting, self-aware spy series packed with smart asses. New Movie Reviews: The Incredible Hulk, The Happening, and Quid Pro Quo
The cinematic return of the biggest green superhero around is here with The Incredible Hulk. DVD Talk critics Brian Orndorf and David Walker both recommend the fast-paced picture. M. Night Shyamalan imagines the end of the world in the disappointing horror bonanza The Happening. And the disabled become the object of sexual fetishes in the unnerving drama Quid Pro Quo. Also in theaters: Jonathan Rhys Meyers portrays the saintly George Hogg in the historical melodrama The Children of Huang Shi, also starring Chow Yun Fat and Radha Mitchell. Be sure to catch reviews of other recent Theatrical Films: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Strangers, Sex and the City, You Don't Mess with the Zohan, Kung Fu Panda, Mother of Tears, The Fall, The Promotion. War, Inc., Iron Man, and Mongol. As always, we invite you to share your thoughts on films In Theaters in our Movie Talk Forum.

DVD Savant: Tobor the Great, The Andromeda Strain (2008), and Day of the Outlaw
Tobor the Great This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Tobor the Great - A ditzy, juvenile anti-commie boy & robot story from 1954. Tobor has brains, brawn and communicates through ESP. Now, if only he did something interesting; The Andromeda Strain (2008) - This new miniseries comes to DVD only a couple of days after its TV premiere. Michael Crichton's classic is 'expanded' with 101 new Sci-Fi sidebars and political detours; and Day of the Outlaw - Andre De Toth's snowbound western pits Robert Ryan against Burl Ives in a tense story of a mountain town overrun by an outlaw gang. Tina Louise co-stars in this superior 50s western. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

This Week's Notable DVDs: Jumper, John Adams, and The Bucket List
JumperThose SOBs at the studios are hyping more mediocre films this week hoping to convince the public that they're worth buying on DVD or Blu-ray. Case in point:   Jumper [review], [review], [Blu-ray review] - A lack of clarity combined with the horrendous onscreen talent turns this film from a potential big screen blockbuster (and fantastic future franchise) into a Sci-Fi Channel direct-to-DVD splat. There are some good releases though, making this, yet again, another banner week for DVDs. Check out: John Adams [review] - a superb portrayal of one of the seminal figures of American history fueled by two knockout performances by Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney; and The Bucket List [review]- the kind of movie Frank Capra himself would be making were he around today--equal parts slapstick, drama and character study, with just a sprinkling of schmaltz thrown in for good measure. Other new banner releases include:  High Noon: 2-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition [review] (which is not to be confused with the plain old Collector's Edition), Icons of Adventure [review] and Soap: The Complete Series. Be sure to check out our DVD Talk Review Database for all the latest reviews including an entire section devoted to reviews of DVDs out this week.

New DVD Reviews: The Three Stooges, The Red Violin, and Storm
Three Stooges Our reviewers have been busy this week, filling the DVD Talk Review Database more great entries. Some new reviews of note include: The Three Stooges Collection, Volume Two: 1937-1939 - The shorts in this collection find the team at the very top of their game; they rank alongside the funniest two-reel comedies ever made; Storm - the Swedish directorial team of Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein gives thier take on The Matrix and manages to dothe near impossible. They've made a movie that is as good - or perhaps even better - than the film that inspired them; and The Red Violin - One of the Nineties' more sweeping, elegant epics, this is a full-blooded motion picture experience, a romantic ode to the power of art that grips you from the opening moments and does not let go. Houdini There's been a virtual flood of silent films arriving on DVD lately, and that means that we have yet another installment of Silent DVD. Now Kino has gathered all of his surviving movies as well as some wonderful extras and released them in one very reasonably priced set. Houdini - The Movie Star is one of our favorite silent releases so far this year. We also have a review on Kino's The Magic of Méliès DVD. These 15 early films by the French film innovator are both entertaining and creative and just the thing for someone who wants to sample Méliès work. New DVD Reviews: Dirty Harry, Midnight, and Diva
Dirty Harry This week the DVD Talk Review Database has some great new entries, including some discs you may have overlooked. Recent DVD Reviews include: Dirty Harry (Two-Disc Special Edition) - a damn fine example of laconic agit-prop machismo that's still causing ripples in the pond today, almost forty years after its theatrical run; Midnight (1939) - one of the true classics of the romantic comedy genre; and Diva - a dramatic thriller that once it gets going, is pretty much impossible to stop. Other recent reviews include: Die Hard: Ultimate Collection, Time for Murder, and Barrio Cuba.  Visit the DVD Talk Review Database for all the latest reviews including an entire section devoted to reviews of DVDs out this week and the ability to browse reviews by studio.
