It'd be a good weekend to go to the movies. Here are DVDTalk's recent theatrical reviews: Sin City: A Dame to Kill For - there's a lot to really enjoy about this film... the violence and well-fitting dialogue is only made better by Eva Green's captivating performance; Starred Up - boasting an incredibly smooth sense of pacing, director David Mackenzie and writer Jonathan Asser have crafted an instant classic that puts other prison films to shame; and The One I Love - a smart and surprising take on the romantic comedy that adds an interesting dimension to the set-up of a troubled couple on a weekend retreat. This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Pickpocket - Robert Bresson's hypnotic ode to spiritual transcendence is a fascinating film, especially after one reads about the director's approach to filmmaking -- no professional actors, no 'performing' or emotions allowed; Call Her Savage - A notorious pre-Code pot-boiler resurfaces to show us a great silent actress struggling to survive in the talkies; and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! - Pedro Almodóvar's film is a racy anti-PC comedy- asylum graduate Antonio Banderas stalks and imprisons ex- porn star and junkie Victoria Abril in an apartment, to wait until she falls in love with him. This week several great movies are coming out, including a few that shouldn't be missed: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 [review] - this second film from director Marc Webb is a more confident outing, and Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy steal the show; Y tu mama tambien [review] - It's been thirteen years since its release, but this film doesn't feel dated at all, and the good people at Criterion top themselves with this excellent dual-format presentation; and Toy Story of Terror [review] - the movie is a lot of fun and Disney has added plenty of solid supplementals for Pixar geeks to enjoy.
