Guardian of the Highlands (2012) is significant because it may well mark the final film of actor Sean Connery. Connery, 83, had officially retired from acting after starring in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in 2003, but probably owing to his strong support of causes and projects emanating from his native Scotland, executive-produced and lent his voice to its first animated feature, originally released as Sir Billi. Publicly, Connery was pleased with the way the film turned out, but virtually no one else was. Critics were harsh when it debuted at the Sonoma International Film Festival and it went straight to home video in the U.S. (In Britain it opened on just three screens.) In response, Connery made clear his complete and utter retirement from the motion picture industry.

The movie was produced with the best intentions and had it turned out the way probably every...Read the entire review

Tad, The Lost Explorer (Blu-ray) Blu-ray https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/review/61710 Sat, 28 Sep 2013 12:16:17 UTC Highly Recommended

Tad, The Lost Explorer, originally released in Spain as Las Aventuras de Tadeo Jones and appearing to be a fairly major release over there, makes a quiet Stateside debut in English on this release from Vivendi. Cleverly animated in CG, it tells the story of Tad Stones (named after the Disney animator and voiced in English by Kerry Shale), who has dreamed of being an archaeologist all his life. Although he's made friends with local archaeologist Professor Humbert (Mac MacDonald), the most adventure he can get into by himself is working as part of a construction crew and that doesn't last too long after he's fired for dreaming on the job. He gets lucky however when Professor Humbert gets a notice from his friend Professor Lavrov (also voiced by MacDonald) to meet him in Peru, as he's discovered the second half of a stone "key" that Humbert has had the other half of for a long time. Though I've never been a big fan of hip hop music, I've found that movies centered around it are usually enjoyable. 8 Mile for example worked for me even though it was clichéd with the whole poor-person-struggling-to-hit-it-big theme, but on the other hand there have been movies like Turn It Up which were extremely forgettable and seemed to just be preying upon their target audiences. I wasn't sure what I was going to get with Filly Brown but I was willing to give it a shot.

The title character, whose real name is Majo Tonorio (played by Gina Rodriguez and having no connection with the similarly-named Foxy Brown), writes her own "rhymes" about her life and dreams of becoming a superstar. What really motivates her however is to help her mother (Jen...Read the entire review

On a single day, in a span of 15 or 20 minutes, the lives of several people are entwined in a mix of fate and chance. Cory (Devon Gearheart) knows his baby brother needs medicine, but he can't afford it, so he hops over to his grandfather's house, finds a revolver, and goes into a grocery store owned by Shane (Derek Richardson) and Mala (Moon Bloodgood) with plans to rob it. Dom (Jesse Bradford) is on the run when he bumps into Alexa (Q'orianka Kilcher), an alluring delivery girl he immediately falls for. Two police officers, Clyde (Christian Slater) and Marti (Nicky Whelan) track a man they believe to be a domestic terrorist and the package he intercepted. Finally, homeless drifters Doke (Christopher Walken) and Brown (Jordan Prentice) wander the street looking for trouble, while Junkshow (Anthony Anderson) and Shamu (Juvenile) are the men hunting for Dom.

The Film:

Is it even really worth the time to review the story fueling Outlaw Brothers? That's the question that went through my mind while watching its blitzed finale, full of gunshots, flying chicken feathers, and vigorous hand-to-hand brawls in a maze of cigarette shipping boxes. A handful of these scenes are studded across director/actor Frankie Chan's cult action film, about a pair of good-guy car thieves who get in over their heads with underworld activity and police-force evasion, and they're clearly the reason that the production came to exist. And there's nothing wrong with that, really, when bursts of choreography and quick editing are this good, easily on-par with other celebrated late-'80s, early-'90s Hong Kong action films. The Two-Part Miniseries:

Crashing waves, creaking windswept decks, and gruff voices aboard the Hispaniola inhabit Treasure Island, suggesting that adventure and copious swashbuckling intrigue shall run rampant as Steve Barron (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) takes the helm on an updated version of the classic story. Those expecting a faithful adaptation should change course, though: essentially, this version operates as a shadow of Robert Louis Stevenson's book, with superfluous flourishes of altered material geared to reinterpret the classic story for a modern audience. Neverland (Blu-ray) Blu-ray https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/review/53708 Wed, 11 Apr 2012 22:22:11 UTC Recommended

The Movie:

SyFy has brought yet another reimaging of a popular character to the small screen with their Neverland adaptation. This time the hook (pardon the pun) is that the film is a prequel of sorts to what these characters will become. I'm not too familiar with the story, because I've never read the books or seen any of the previous film adaptations, not even Hook.

Neverland starts out easy enough with Peter (Charlie Rowe), as he leads his gang of pickpocket boys all around the city on a thieving spree under the watchful eye of their manager-boss-of-sorts James Hook (Rhys Ifans) who will go on to be the great Captain Hook that we all know and love.

Peter is itching to move on to bigger and better capers, but Hook wants him to slow down and follow his lead. It seems that Hook has been commissioned by a mysterious group to retrieve a special orb of some kind....Read the entire review

The Woman:
Fainting and vomiting at festival screenings can be seen as a hearty endorsement of the latest extreme horror movie. Of course little credence is given to the idea of a keyed-up festival atmosphere exacerbating the effects of a horror movie, nor is there much examination of the effects of binge drinking on horror movie audiences. So when Lucky McKee's latest, the Jack Ketchum written The Woman caused a big ruckus at the Sundance Film Festival, horror aficionados got their BVDs in a bunch for two reasons. They wanted to know if the movie was extreme as all that, or if such hysterical reactions were part of an ill-planned publicity stunt.

The verdict, according to me, your ultimate arbiter, is this: pretty much everyone misread this movie. Extreme and willful though it is, The Woman is no misogynistic evil, it's a blunt and badass horror thrill-ride with equal parts b...Read the entire review

Several cinematic adaptations of "Moby Dick" -- Captain Ahab's mania-driven hunt for "the white whale" -- have appeared on big and small screens over the years, but balancing Herman Melville's novel with casting a wider audience net has proven to be a tough undertaking. John Huston's sepia-tinted version (review here) nails down its melancholy essence and adventurous magnetism, but can't avoid the off-and-on discomfited demeanor that Gregory Peck brings Ahab. I'll go out on a limb and say that we all know that big Hollywood studios are generally devoid of new material or ideas, and that they have to lean on other sources of material to shape for North American sensibilities. Sometimes it works, most times, it does not, and there are others that result in different shades of gray. And before Martin Scorsese won a long overdue Oscar for The Departed, in its other incarnation the story had already been realized as Infernal Affairs, a Hong Kong crime thriller that spawned two sequels before filming on The Departed had even begun. Thankfully, now there can be more of a comparison made between an American remake and its international predecessor. So how does Infernal Affairs stack up to it, along with its own merits?

1906. Starting with the country's first political assassination in 1901, civil unrest spreads throughout China. An underground movement of citizens known as the United League of China looks to overthrow the Qing Dynasty and bring democracy to the country, with Dr. Sun Wen leading the charge. News spreads that Dr. Wen is making a trip from Tokyo to Hong Kong that could set everything in motion, and a laundry list of corrupt Chinese generals and assassins converge on Hong Kong with the intent of wiping out Dr. Sun before he can communicate with a group of the League's most powerful members, and put an end to the revolution.
