Talking Out of Frame: Roberto Rossellini, Che, and Paris, Texas
Talking Out of Frame One month into 2010, and we already have what seems like an embarrassment of riches in terms of DVDs. Criterion has really knocked it out of the park with their new boxed set Roberto Rossellini's War Trilogy - Watching this collection doesn't feel like you're just watching movies, but like you are watching history; the three-disc Che set, also from Criterion earns the DVD Talk Collector Series rating, and then there's Wim Wenders' drama Paris, Texas which is described as "a film of countless pleasures." Check out all that and much, much more in this month's installment of Talking Out of Frame: Arthouse Cinema on DVD.

Recently Announced Discs: The Princess and the Frog, Ninja Assassin, Doctor Who
The Princess and the Frog Some great (and not so great) movies have been scheduled for release. Check out these newly announced titles: The Princess and the Frog on DVD and Blu-ray - Disney's latest animated feature arrives on 3/16/10; Ninja Assassin on DVD and Blu-ray - just because DVD Talk's review of the theatrical release called it "a confused, tedious merging of absurdly overcooked violence and a drab screenplay" doesn't mean it's not worth checking out when it is released on 3/16/10. Or maybe it does; and Doctor Who: Dreamland on DVD - David Tennant stars in the second animated Doctor Who adventure to be released on DVD. Look for it on 5/4/10. Keep track of all the upcoming releases with the DVDTalk Release List.

DVD Savant: Bad Girls of Film Noir, Countdown, and The Last Stage
Bad Girls of Film Noir Volume 1 This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Bad Girls of Film Noir Volume 1 - Columbia reaches into its "B" noir racks to come up with a fistful of femmes, some more fatale than others: Evelyn Keyes, Lola Albright, Lizabeth Scott and Gloria Grahame. The films in question are The Killer that Stalked New York, Two of a Kind, Bad for Each Other and The Glass Wall; Countdown - Robert Altman's first major studio feature gives us a superior suspense film about the space race to the moon, with good performances from James Caan, Robert Duvall, Barbara Baxley and Joanna Moore. The film is all the more daring, considering that it was made the year before the Apollo moon landing; and The Last Stage - Wanda Jakubowska's harrowing tale of Auschwitz is probably the earliest and certainly one of the most graphic -- it was filmed in the actual concentration camp just three years after the close of the war. This is a problem picture: influenced by pro-Soviet propaganda, it's accurate in some details and shamefully deceitful in others. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
