Some great TV shows have made their way onto DVD this week including: Frozen Planet: The Complete Series - The BBC has once again set the standard for nature documentaries with this riveting and beautiful series; NOVA: Mystery of a Masterpiece - Engaging, exciting, and enlightening - a real-life fast-paced mystery; and Into the Abyss - this documentary by Werner Herzog is one of the best films of 2011. This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Pharaoh's Curse -This cut-rate UA mummy epic lacks pyramids and an impressive monster but it does have sultry Ziva Rodann and is much better than its overall reputation would suggest; Vice Raid - this sordid saga gives Mamie Van Doren a real role to play, against Brad Dexter's oily proprietor of mob-run "model agencies"; and The Buccaneer - Noble pirate Jean Lafitte helps Andrew Jackson hold off the Redcoats in the New Orleans swamps... historical foolishness rendered impressive with grand VistaVision cinematography. The seventh--and final--season of Adam-12 is out now on a 4-DVD set! Ride along with Malloy and Reed on their final cases. Based on real police events around the city of Los Angeles, Season Seven finds the officers busting scam artists, training rookies, working narcotics, searching for missing persons, tracking a suicidal man, dealing with a citizen hell-bent on taking the law into his own hands and more. The series ends with a bang as the offices are involved in a dangerous shootout! With this release, you can now own seasons 2-7 on DVD from Shout! Factory.

This week several great movies are coming out, including a few that shouldn't be missed: A Trip to the Moon Restored [Blu-ray review] - an important landmark in the history of cinema rounded out with a bounty of contextualizing extras that draw us further into and behind the Méliès magic; Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except [Blu-ray review] - Vietnam vets versus the Manson Family...'Nuff said!; and Donald Glover - Weirdo [DVD review] - the man is simply funny and his on-stage persona is so energetic, giddy, and fun that this special is inherently a good time. Some cool discs have been reviewed over the past week. Check out these recent entries: A Night to Remember - With its nuanced direction and no-frills performances, this film would make for enthralling drama even if it wasn't based on real events; Lost Keaton - Sixteen Comedy Shorts, 1934-1937 - All 16 of Keaton's Educational shorts are here and this set is fascinating for its failures as well as its successes, and there are more of the latter; and The Ring - still one of the scariest and most unnerving remakes.
