DVD Savant: Shivers, Audrey Rose, and Topkapi
Shivers This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Shivers - David Cronenberg's first commercial feature is barely more than a softcore porn film, but in conception and execution it's a little masterpiece. ; Audrey Rose - From Frank De Felitta's best selling novel, this Robert Wise picture is the most confoundingly prestigious/frustrating horror offering of the '70s, a dumber-than Pazuzu Exorcist follow-up that torments a little girl for two hours, for the apparent purpose of getting us to accept the Eastern religious concept of reincarnation. It's not a thriller, it's an infomercial; and Topkapi - Jules Dassin films the flip side of his pessimistic Rififi in this brightly colored comic caper comedy set in the exotic city of Istanbul. A gang of crooks trick the nervous Peter Ustinov into sneaking across the rooftops of the fabulous Topkapi Museum, there to snatch a priceless treasure for the greedy-but-inspired temptress Melina Mercouri. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

This Week's Notable Releases: Nightbreed, The Vanishing, and WKRP In Cincinnati
Nightbreed: The Director's Cut There are some new titles coming out that might make it worth a trip to the video store this week. Check out these recent releases: Nightbreed: The Director's Cut [review] - a legitimate director's cut of the movie, it includes a lot of new footage and corrects the results of studio meddling... the film is immeasurably improved because of it; The Vanishing [review] - a masterpiece, really... the performances and technique on display are uniformly excellent while the story remains both engaging and genuinely frightening; and WKRP In Cincinnati: The Complete Series [review] - the place of WKRP within television history is an understated one, one that deserves more attention... when the show goes for laughs, they hit all of pitches thrown at them. Now the program finally has the quality release it deserves. Be sure to check out our DVD Talk Review Database for all the latest reviews including an entire section devoted to reviews of DVDs out this week.

New Movie Reviews: John Wick, Laggies, and Force Majeure
John Wick Planning a trip to the local multiplex this weekend? Here are DVD Talk's reviews of the latest theatrical releases: John Wick [review #2, #3, and #4] - audiences who are searching for a wild ride of an action film will be incredibly satisfied with this Keanu Reeves flick... it's violent, funny, wickedly exciting and it has a cool sense of style; Laggies [review #2] - this film about the trials of growing up is well-observed and a smartly played character piece that ends up being a crowd-pleaser; and Force Majeure - Sweden's official Oscar entry into the "Best Foreign Language Category," this is a well-crafted film that asks a seemingly simple, yet an ultimately complex question. Other recent films include: Birdman, Fury, Dracula Untold, Gone Girl, Harmontown, A Walk Among the Tombstones, The Maze Runner, Kelly & Cal, The Drop, The Skeleton Twins, The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, The November Man, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Guardians of the Galaxy, 22 Jump Street, and How to Train Your Dragon 2. TV on DVD: From Dusk Till Dawn, The Danny Kaye Show, and Bronco
From Dusk Till Dawn: Season One Some great TV shows have made their way onto DVD this week including: From Dusk Till Dawn: Season One - a surprisingly effective television reboot of the original cult classic film; The Best of the Danny Kaye Show - quite an enjoyable overview of a classic variety series... hoofer-crooner-clown Danny Kaye is a magnetic performer who is a delight to watch; and Bronco: The Complete First Season - Good writing, no-nonsense direction, and excellent supporting turns--with newcomer Ty Hardin doing just fine in his first big break--make this an unpretentious winner. Other shows recently reviewed include:  NYPD Blue: Season 6, Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season One, and Medical Center: The Complete Fifth Season.  Want more?  Check out all of the TV on DVD reviews in the DVD Talk database.

DVD Savant: Yankee Doodle Dandy, The Blob, and True Confessions
Yankee Doodle Dandy This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Yankee Doodle Dandy - THE most successful all-time patriotic crowdpleaser tells the happy story of George M. Cohan, the toast of Broadway who wrote both songs and plays and performed as well. If he wasn't a legend already, star James Cagney seals the deal in some of the most energy-charged dance scenes ever; The Blob - Chuck Russell and Frank Darabont had a hit with this remake of the 1958 creep 'n' leap classic. No Steve McQueen this time but the same exact story with the addition of a government conspiracy, a willingness to kill off all the interesting characters, and a surfeit of gory blob attacks; and True Confessions - An impressive pairing of actors Robert DeNiro and Robert Duvall elevates this drama of corruption in late- '40s Los Angeles to an unheralded classic. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

DVD Talk Coverage: 2014 Tallgrass Film Festival
Gone Girl Writer Jason Bailey was able to attend the Wichita, Kansas-based Tallgrass Film Festival this year and had the chance to see some impressive films there. From Little Hope Was Arson, a documentary that digs into the rash of church fires that stunned East Texas a few years back, to the fabulously entertaining and surprisingly sweet A Life in Dirty Movies, there was plenty of quality films to see. Other entries of note include the endlessly likable Sun Belt Express, the story of a would-be idealist supplementing his meager teaching income by working as a coyote-for-hire, and Before I Disappear, an involving and disarmingly unique picture from writer/director/star Shawn Christensen. Read about all this and more in DVD Talk's coverage of the 2014 Tallgrass Film Festival.

This Week's Notable Releases: Pee-wee's Playhouse, Vincent Price, and Billy Crystal
Pee-wee's Playhouse: The Complete Series There are some new titles coming out that might make it worth a trip to the video store this week. Check out these recent releases: Pee-wee's Playhouse: The Complete Series [review] - all these years later, the silly fun of this show remains a joy to watch... the quality of the set in high-definition is outstanding and Shout! Factory has loaded it with a fantastic amount of retrospective bonus content; The Vincent Price Collection II [review] - seriously great stuff... this is an excellent selection of some of Price's best and most enjoyed films presented with a very strong array of supplements old and new; and Billy Crystal 700 Sundays [review] - Billy Crystal's autobiographical one-man show about growing up in Long Beach is so vibrant, heartfelt, and delightfully descriptive that it's not hard for our imagination to leave the physical confines of the stage and find ourselves smack dab in the middle of an eccentric yet caring and loving Jewish family's day-to-day lives in 1950s New York. Be sure to check out our DVD Talk Review Database for all the latest reviews including an entire section devoted to reviews of DVDs out this week.

Birdman Before you head off to the cinema this weekend, check out DVD Talk's reviews of the latest releases including: Birdman - Michael Keaton plays a washed up actor who produces a stage play based on the character he made popularized back in the day... the film is uniquely effective as both a drama and comedy; Fury [review #2, review #3] - an incredibly bleak look at battle and one of the more intense war films to come about recently; and The Book of Life - this new animated feature is a wonderful story placed within the context of the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead Other recent films include: Dracula Untold, Gone Girl, Harmontown, A Walk Among the Tombstones, The Maze Runner, Kelly & Cal, The Drop, The Skeleton Twins, The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, The November Man, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Guardians of the Galaxy, 22 Jump Street, and How to Train Your Dragon 2. DVD Talk Interview: The Birthday Boys
The Birthday Boys A recent addition to the sketch-comedy landscape, IFC’s The Birthday Boys, executive produced by Bob Odenkirk (Mr. Show) and Ben Stiller (The Ben Stiller Show) , adapts the troupe’s popular Upright Citizens Brigade stage show to television, with a second season kicking off October 17 at 11 p.m. EST. Three members of the group, Dave Ferguson, Mike Hanford and Tim Kalpakis, spent a little time with DVDTalk’s Francis Rizzo III for a delightful little chat about translating the stage to TV, working with Dana Carvey and combating segregation. Read all this, and more, in the latest DVD Talk Interview.

DVD Savant: Edge of Tomorrow, Iguana, and Run Silent, Run Deep
Edge of Tomorrow This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Edge of Tomorrow - A clever, exciting and funny screenplay, good direction and a fine performance from Tom Cruise (he plays a jerk) grace a Sci-fi combat action spectacle; Iguana - a disfigured misanthrope enslaves captives on a desert island and takes what he wants from them -- obedience, sex -- with threats of violence.
