New Movie Reviews: Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, Jonas Brothers 3D, and Echelon Conspiracy
The Street Fighter video game legacy returns to the big screen in the martial arts actioner Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. DVD Stalk: Feast III, My Bloody Valentine, and Friday the 13th!
Friday the 13th Wow, how time flies. It's 2009 already and we haven't had an installment of DVDStalk yet this year. Does that mean the horror mavens here are going soft? No, just forgetful. So with belated Happy New Year wishes, this month's Stalk takes a look at some of the horror movies that have come across our reviewers' plates over the last month or so including The Exterminating Angel, the direct-to-video Feast III: The Happy Finish, and Lionsgate's 3-D remake of the eighties slasher classic, My Bloody Valentine. Recently Announced Discs: Slumdog Millionaire, Sergeant Preston of the Yukon, and Day the Earth Stood Still
Slumdog Millionaire There are some great titles that have just been announced, including: Slumdog Millionaire - After being the big winner at last Sunday's Oscars, the Danny Boyle film will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on 3-31-09; The first season of the vintage adventure show Sergeant Preston of the Yukon comes to DVD on 3-17-09; and the Keanu Reeves remake of that classic 50's SF film Day the Earth Stood Still rears its ugly head on 4-7-09 on both DVD and Blu-ray. DVD Savant: French Connection, Donnie Darko, and The Quare Fellow
French Connection This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: French Connection - William Friedkin's Blu-ray of the Oscar-winning cop classic boasts a long list of new HD extras -- and a controversial new HD transfer.; Donnie Darko - Blu-ray. Richard Kelly's oddball teen angst picture is fast becoming a confirmed classic. Donnie Darko is a disturbed high schooler who takes orders from a demonic rabbit that warns that the end of the world is 28 days away. ; and The Quare Fellow - Patrick McGoohan fans, a real find. This Week's Notable DVDs: Akira, Futurama, and The Universe
Akira (Blu-ray) There's been a bit of a lull in high profile releases this week. (You know when we end up featuring Wonder Pets!: Join the Circus, there's not a lot to choose from.) Even so, there are some titles worth checking out such as: Akira (Blu-ray) [review] - a lush, if sometimes ultraviolent, trip through a humankind on the brink of enormous evolutionary change. The sterling visual and especially audio quality of this release, makes this an easy entry into the DVD Talk Collector Series pantheon; Futurama: Into The Wild Green Yonder [review]- this fourth direct-to-DVD film features a slew of terrific jokes, creative plots twists and colorful characters; and The Universe: Collector's Edition Megaset [DVD review]- an interesting, entertaining, and well produced look at our galaxy and the rest of the cosmos. After years of release delays and post-production tinkering the Star Wars geek dramedy Fanboys finally arrives in theaters. A pair of thirty-year-old actors portray cheerleading teenagers in the rancid comedy Fired Up!. And a staple of Showbiz Pizza lounges and daydreams is chronicled in The Rock-afire Explosion. Also in theaters: Tyler Perry returns to his slapstick roots with the facepalm farce Madea Goes to Jail. And a box marked with specific directions leads to an unforgettable dysfunctional family history in the documentary Must Read After My Death. TV on DVD: Tim and Eric Awesome Show, What Makes Sammy Run?, and Greek
Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!: Season 2 From classic dramas to modern comedies DVD Talk has the newest TV releases covered including:  Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!: Season 2 - simultaneously brilliant and dense but as out there as it is, it's consistently hysterical; What Makes Sammy Run? - this is the only filmed version of the searing Hollywood tell-all - and it's simply fantastic; and Greek: Chapter Two - in its second season the show remains addictively entertaining, fun, and endearing. DVD Savant: Roman Polanski, Yentl, and Precinct 13
Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired - Marina Zenovich's docu examines the crime that sent director Polanski into exile, using remarkable, unseen news footage and thorough, illuminating interviews; Yentl - This Two-Disc Director's Cut marks the first time Barbra Streisand's first directorial effort has been released to DVD. It's a musical, a drama and a comedy. The extras include unseen rehearsal videos and a unreleased songs; and Assault on Precinct 13 - John Carpenter's first Panavision thriller comes to Blu-ray, and looks terrific. Recently Announced Discs: Hellraiser, Dexter, and True Blood
Hellraiser Box Set We seem to have past the post-holiday season lull and the studios are scheduling some cool new discs. Recently announced DVDs and Blu-ray discs of note include: Hellraiser Box Set - This set contains the first two Hellblazer films on DVD as well as a Blu-ray copy of Hellraiser I. All in a very cool puzzle box replica. Look for it on 4-21-09; Everyone's favorite serial killer returns on 5-5-09 when Dexter: Season 2 is released on Blu-ray; and 5-19-09 is when the first season of HBO's popular vampire series, True Blood (DVD) [Blu-ray] hits store shelves. High School Musical 3 Another banner week for DVDs with the studios releasing some good films such as: High School Musical 3 [review, Blu-ray review] - the latest installment in Disney's ultra-popular franchise arrives on home video after a successful theatrical run and provides the original cast a platform for a marvelous, bouncy final bow; Religulous [review]- Everyone should be able to appreciate the questions that are asked in this film; and Changeling [DVD review, Blu-ray review]- another high point from Clint Eastwood, one of our finest directors. DVD Talk's 2009 Academy Award Predictions
oscar It's almost that time of year. In less than a week the stars both in front of and behind the cameras will dress in their finest and head to the Kodak Theater in Hollywood for the 81st Academy Awards. Who will win? More importantly; who should win? We polled the DVDTalk review panel, a group of people who spend WAY too much time watching, talking, and writing about movies, to give us their thoughts. New Movie Reviews: Friday the 13th, International, and Two Lovers
The wrath of horror icon Jason Voorhees has been resurrected by another frightening figure of cinema, Michael Bay, in Friday the 13th. Clive Owen and Naomi Watts battle merciless evil in the form of a global bank in the Tom Tykwer thriller The International. And Joaquin Phoenix has to pick between Gwyneth Paltrow and Vinessa Shaw in the James Gray drama/male fantasy Two Lovers. Also in theaters: Actress Isla Fisher is wonderful, yet the materialistic comedy Confessions of a Shopaholic is not. And the mob genre is taken to disturbing new heights in the outstanding crime film Gomorrah. DVD Savant: Cyclops, Changeling, and Five
Cyclops This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Cyclops - Roger Corman conquers a new exploitation jungle, the cable TV backwater of the Sci-Fi channel. This Roman monster mash uses standing sets and mediocre effects but delivers the requisite gallons of gory mayhem.; Changeling - Clint Eastwood fashions a tense kidnapping story for Angelina Jolie, but something's missing at the center. Great acting, nice period detail, true story; and Five - Arch Oboler's prophetic is the first post-nuke drama, a grimly uncompromised Sci-Fi story that plays like a foreign art film ... in 1951. The 27-disc set is available on DVD 4-14-09; Writer Charlie Kaufman ("Being John Malkovich," "Adaptation," and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind") directs his first feature with Synecdoche New York, [Blu-ray] The mind-bending film hits shelves on 3-10-09; and Warner is releasing a two-disc collection of fondly remembered cartoons in Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1970's it arrives on 5-19-09.
