DVD Talk's Top Discs of 2009 and Top Theatrical Releases
DVD Talk's Top 20 discs of 2009 2009 saw some great movies and shows released, and DVD Talk's writers have put their heads together to come up with DVD Talk's Top 20 discs of 2009. The reviewers nominated their favorite discs, voted for their favorite 10, and this is the result. The list includes some of the biggest releases of 2009, as well as some excellent discs that didn't get as much press as they should have. One thing is for sure, you can't go wrong with any of these top-notch DVDs and Blu-ray discs. Writer Jason Bailey also selects his top 10 theatrical releases for the past year. Anime Talk: The Dragon Box, Nabari no Ou and manga reviews
Anime Talk Welcome to the Christmas Eve edition of Anime Talk! Despite being busy for the holidays John and Todd have been scrambling to get reviews done. Trust us when we tell you it has been a challenge! There are so many releases this time of year and neither of our piles have dissipated during the past month or so. Some awesome stuff has come out, but then again there has been some not-so-awesome stuff as well. This month we're also featuring some manga reviews as we try to expand our coverage! WTK comes by with some more bargains as well! Finally, all of us here at Anime Talk hope everyone has a happy holiday with friends and family, and that you all are able to stay warm during these winter months. TV on DVD: The Paper Chase, The Tudors, and Star Trek on Blu-ray

The Most Impressive Discs of 2009 This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: The Most Impressive Discs of 2009 - Savant chooses his subjective favorite DVDs and Blu-Rays, coming up with a list to baffle video lovers stand the test of time and good taste. With an essay about the state of home video discs; The Battle of Chile - The document of modern South American history ... filmed in 1972 and 1973, before and during the Coup D'Etat against President Salvador Allende's government in Chile. A four-disc set that includes director Patricio Guzmán's 1997 follow-up feature, Chile, Obstinate Memory; and The Animation of Alexeïeff - Facets Video collects most of the animation work of Alexandre Alexeïeff and Claire Parker, inventors of the amazing animation pinscreen. Recently Announced Discs: Toy Story 1 & 2 and Mickey Rooney: Long & Short of It
Toy Story There are a few discs scheduled for early next year that should get film buffs excited. Check out these new titles: Toy Story and Toy Story 2 on Blu-ray - Can't wait for next summer's release of Toy Story 3? Pick up the first two films in HD! They will be available on 3/23/10; and Mickey Rooney: Long & Short of It - Infinity Entertainment Group is going to release a 6 disc tribute to the diminutive yet popular screen star. Containing 14 movies(!), shorts, television apperances, and trailers covering his entire career, this should be an exciting collection. It will arrive on 1/26/10. RiffTrax LIVE: Christmas Shorts-stravaganza!
 RiffTrax LIVE The stars of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) return to movie theaters across America this holiday season with special guest "Weird Al" Yankovic as they take on the bizarre animated "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and other classic Christmas shorts and commercials in RiffTrax LIVE: Christmas Shorts-Stravaganza! The exclusive, in-theater event was broadcast live last night, and DVDTalk reviewer John Sinnott was there to catch all of the hilarity. Check out his review and then make plans to see the pre-recorded encore tonight, Thursday, Dec. 17th!

TV on DVD: Farscape, Into the Storm, and SpongeBob
Farscape: The Complete Series TV on DVD remains very popular with more and more favorites being released. New TV reviews include: Farscape: The Complete Series - All four seasons of this incredible sci-fi series are back in print at last; Into the Storm - The sharp screenplay and a brilliant turn by Brendan Gleeson as Winston Churchill make this a memorable look at one of the twentieth century's key figures; and SpongeBob SquarePants: Season 6, Volume 1 - the season started off wobbly, but rebounded quite nicely with some of the funniest SpongeBob cartoons in recent memory. Recently Announced Discs: The Invention of Lying and The Bad Girls of Film Noir
The Invention of Lying A few notable discs have been announced in the past week or so. Check out these new titles: The Invention of Lying on DVD and Blu-ray - Ricky Gervais gathers an all-star team of actors in this outrageous comedy. It will be available on 1/19/10; and Sony is releasing two collections of Noir films: Bad Girls of Film Noir 1 which includes The Killer That Stalked New York, Two Of A Kind, Bad For Each Other, and The Glass Wall and Bad Girls of Film Noir 2 which will have Night Editor, One Girl's Confession, Women's Prison, and Over-Exposed. DVD Savant: Gimme Shelter, Taking Woodstock, and Mission to Moscow
Gimme Shelter This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Gimme Shelter [Blu-ray] - Criterion returns for a Blu-ray edition of the Maysles Brothers classic concert film, the one that records the misery of Altamont, and the end of the Summer of Love years; Taking Woodstock [Blu-ray] - Ang Lee's comedy drama of the behind-the-scenes genesis of the Woodstock festival becomes an amusing circus of hippie-era observations and historic recreation. Viewers of the concert movie will enjoy its interesting point of view; and Mission to Moscow - This jaw-dropping wartime propaganda movie about the Soviet Union tells more political lies than I've heard since Reagan was the governor of California! Book Talk - The Twilight Zone and Ishiro Honda
Book talk This month DVDTalk reviewer Stuart Galbraith IV takes over our Book Talk column with his take on a pair of interesting books. The first is The Twilight Zone - Unlocking the Door to a Television Classic by Martin Grams, Jr., an utterly indispensable 800-page reference to Rod Serling's classic 1959-1964 anthology series. Following that is a review of Mushroom Clouds and Mushroom Men - The Fantastic Cinema of Ishiro Honda by Peter H. Brothers. Brother's offering is a film-by-film guide to the Japanese director's (who collaborated with Akira Kurosawa later in life) 25 fantasy features, preceded by an approximately 60-page overview of Honda's life and career. Recently Announced Discs: Stargate SG-U, The Phantom, and The Final Destination
Stargate SG-U: Season One The studios have announced some great shows and movies coming to DVD and Blu-ray including: Stargate SG-U: Season One on DVD and Blu-ray - The third (!) series inspired by the 1994 Roland Emmerich film comes to home video on 2/9/10; The Phantom [Blu-ray] - The Lee Falk comic strip comes to life in this fun and unduly maligned 1996 film. It arrives on 2/9/10; and The Final Destination on DVD and Blu-ray - The 4th installment of the popular horror series gets a confusing name and is billed as "from the director of Snakes on a Plane". DVD Savant: The General, Tora-San, and The Universal Cult Horror Collection
The General This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: The General [Blu-ray] - Blu-ray fits Buster Keaton like a glove in this exceptionally bright and sharp restoration of the 1927 classic. With three separate music track choices and some fine extras on the making of the film and the historical "Great Locomotive Chase"; Tora-San Collector's Set 1 - Japan's number one comedy-drama series is also the longest running film series with the same lead actor: 35 years, 48 movies. Kiyoshi Atsumi is Tora-San, a travelling peddler who causes havoc for his relatives. This first disc release contains the initial four Tora-San films, along with AnimEigo's expected extras and a commentary by Stuart Galbraith IV; and Universal Cult Horror Collection - This latest horror compendium assembles one atmospheric 30's Paramount shocker and four Universal program chillers from the 1940s: Murders in the Zoo, The Mad Doctor of Market Street, The Strange Case of Dr. Rx, The Mad Ghoul, House of Horrors. This Week's Notable DVDs: Terminator Salvation, MST3K: XVI, and Night at the Museum
Terminator Salvation (Blu-ray) Some noteworthy DVDs are coming out this week including: Terminator Salvation [Blu-ray review]- a film that's filled with both jaw-dropping action and thought provoking, thematically driven concepts; Mystery Science Theater 3000: XVI [DVD review] - this set includes four episodes of the loving but venomous, b-movie riffing series; and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian [review]- fans of the first movie won't be disappointed at this sequel.
