The Tribeca Film Festival: Week Two
The Trotsky The Tribeca Film Festival is entering its second week, and DVD Talk's wall-to-wall coverage continues. DVD Talk Feature: A Tribeca Film Festival Preview
Breck Eisner Launched in 2002 to help reinvigorate lower Manhattan in the wake of 9/11, the Tribeca Film Festival has become one of the foremost festivals on the world cinema scene. This year's festival, which runs April 21 through May 2, boasts a slate of 85 feature films (many of them world or U.S. premieres), and DVD Talk's own Jason Bailey will be there with daily reports and reviews of at least half of them (if all goes according to plan). Check out his Tribeca Preview to see some of the big names and hot indie films on his ambitious schedule. Bailey also has early reviews of some of the festival flicks, including Nicole Holofcener's whip-smart comedy/drama Please Give, Neil Jordan's lyrical adult fairy tale Ondine, and the inventive documentary Arias with a Twist: The Docufantasy.

DVD Savant: Cary Grant, An American Dream, and Dune
Cary Grant: The Early Years This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Cary Grant: The Early Years - The TCM Vault Collection gives us three military themed 30s pictures showing Cary Grant's rapid rise in the ranks of Hollywood stars, beginning as a supporting pretty boy and moving into adventure dramas: Devil and the Deep, The Eagle and the Hawk, The Last Outpost. Rare titles, clean transfers; An American Dream - This 1966 adaptation of a novel by Norman Mailer is a highly entertaining car wreck, a campy exercise in bad taste and pretention. Stuart Whitman is the muckraking TV pundit suspected of murdering his wife, a sadistic nymphomaniac; Janet Leigh is the mob moll dreaming that love is still possible. Great trashy, tasteless fun that leaves no scenery un-chewed; and Dune - Universal presents the Theatrical Cut (only) of David Lynch's extravagant space opera on Blu-ray, making us wish that the director would return to the show for an authorized extended version. Nash Edgerton The Square is a taut thriller that keeps upping the ante at every turn. Building buzz for the Australian export has garnered brothers Joel and Nash Edgerton lofty (but deserved) comparisons to the work of the Coen Brothers, with more accolades pouring in as the film rolls out in select theaters across America. Director and producer Nash Edgerton recently had the time to talk with DVDTalk writer Tyler Foster. That's a Wrap: Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, 2010
That's a Wrap: Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, 2010 Durham, North Carolina was the place to be last weekend if you love documentaries, as the thirteenth annual Full Frame Documentary Film Festival was presented. DVDTalk writer Chris Neilson was there to cover as much of it as was humanly possible. An astounding one-hundred-and-one docs from 27 countries, including 33 US, North American or World premieres, were screened between Thursday morning and Sunday evening. With five programming blocks running from 10 AM to midnight, in five performance spaces, Chris had his work cut out for him. Check out his report and read about the standout films he saw including Lucy Walker's Waste Land, which won the Audience Award, Lixin Fan's Last Train Home, and Tim Hetherington and Sebatian Junger's Restrepo.

DVD Savant: The Baader Meinhof Complex, Dreamscape, and Mammy
 Baader Meinhof Complex This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Baader Meinhof Complex - You'll need to hang on tight to watch this ferocious true-life thriller about the most notorious terrorists of the last century, Germany's Red Army Faction. Their literal reign of terror makes American violent radicals look like children at play. A superior German film with a terrific cast, and highly recommended; Dreamscape - Dennis Quaid is a psychic enlisted by Max Von Sydow to "enter" the dreams of others, a talent subverted by Christopher Plummer as a plot to control the President of the United States. A well-known hit from the early 1980s, marred by an uneven production; and Mammy - Al Jolson's early talkie musical places him in a touring Minstrel Show, in love with his best friend's girl and framed for murder. Book Talk: Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, Dracula, and David Lynch
Frankenstein Welcome to another (and overdue) installment of Book Talk. This time around we have a bit of an eclectic set of books to cover. First DVDTalk writer Casey Burchby has a review of a collection of David Lynch interviews that will sure to please fans of the fascinating director. Unfortunately it won't be in 3D; The Wolfman (2010) on DVD and Blu-ray - Benicio Del Toro steps into Lon Chaney Jr's shoes (and paws) when he takes on the role of Lawrence Talbot in this 2010 remake of the 1941 classic. Pick it up on 6/1/10; and Bob Hope: Thanks for the Memories Collection on DVD - Six Hope films, three of which are new to DVD including the 1939 version of The Cat and the Canary. The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (Theatrical Editions) [Blu-ray] With one notable exception it's a bit of a slow week for new DVDs, though there are some new titles that might make it worth a trip to the video store. Check out these recent releases: The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy [Blu-ray] [review] - Peter Jackson's epic trilogy arrives on Blu-ray. Unfortunately only the theatrical versions are being released at this time, but even these slightly shorter versions are worth picking up; Sharpe's Peril [Blu-ray review] - Sean Bean returns to his role as a infantryman and adventurer in the King's Army in this latest installment in the long-running series; and Icons of Suspense: Hammer Films [DVD review] - Reaching further down into its vault of co-productions with England's Hammer Films, Sony collects five mystery thrillers and one science fiction masterpiece in this intriguing collection. Other releases of note include:  Party Down: Season 1 [DVD review], The Italian Straw Hat [DVD review], and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans [Blu-ray review]. DVD Talk Interview: The Princess and the Frog Directors Ron Clements and John Musker

TV on DVD: Party Down, Mad Men, and Nurse Jackie
Party Down: Season 1 Some great TV shows have made their way onto DVD this week including: Party Down: Season 1 - devastatingly funny, it's absolutely the best comedy that you're not watching; Mad Men: Season 3 [DVD review, Blu-ray review] - one of the most important and enthralling programs on TV; and Nurse Jackie: Season One - One of the most entertaining oddities on TV, it's both sincere and sarcastic--making you laugh and cry in equal doses.
