Videogame Talk's coverage of E3
E3 The world of gaming revolves around E3, the industry's largest media event where various companies announce their upcoming projects and give the world the first look at exciting new games and hardware. This year Mike Flacy, editor of DVD Talk's sister site Videogame Talk, will be attending the entire four day event and twittering from the convention room floor. Mike will also be talking one-on-one with representative from Microsoft about their new HD Zune, discussing Beatles Rock Band with MTV games, and getting the low down about Bioshock 2 & Mafia II from 2K Games. In addition he'll be checking out the rumors about Sony's Slim PS3 and PSP redesign, the possibility of Metal Gear Solid 5 or Half Life 3 being announced, and see if the there's any truth to the whispers that the PS3 and possibly the Wii will have price drops.

You can follow all of Mike's twitter announcements from DVDTalk's home page. We'll be setting up a special feed so they automatically appear on the right side. E3 runs from June 1st through 4th, and then expanded coverage will be on Videogame Talk soon after that. Be sure to follow all of Mike's reports here on DVD Talk.

DVD Talk Interview: Kevin Murphy
Kevin Murphy Mystery Science Theater 3000 fans will instantly recognize the name of Kevin Murphy. He was the voice behind Tom Servo for most of the series run. He's now re-teamed with fellow MST alumni Mike Nelson and Bill Corbett and the trio continues to spoof movies on reasonably priced downloadable MP3s called Rifftrax. The idea has worked so well that on June 16th the group will release 10 Rifftrax DVDs including such classic titles as Reefer Madness and Plan 9 From Outer Space. DVD Talk's own Jason Bailey had a chance to sit down with Kevin Murphy and talk about Rifftrax, if Plan 9 is really the worst movie ever, and the joy of riffing educational shorts. Check out what Kevin has to say in this DVD Talk interview.

DVD Talk Spotlight: Valkyrie
valkyrie This week sees the release of Valkyrie the Bryan Singer/Tom Cruise film about a German plot to assassinate Adolph Hitler at the height of WWII. With an exquisite architecture of suspense as legal tender to persuade audiences to follow what is a rather obscure offering of war-torn German history, the movie eschews gung-ho action for ice-cool subtlety. MGM/United Artists has released the film in three versions: a single-disc DVD, a Two-Disc Special Edition DVD set with a Digital Copy, and a Blu-ray disc, which also includes a Digital Copy. No matter which version you choose, you won't loose with this film that DVD Talk's Brian Orndorf rated as Highly Recommended. [Read his review here.]

Field of Dreams This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Field of Dreams [Blu-ray] - Kevin Costner hears the good word and builds an earthly tabernacle for a pantheon of baseball legends ... all of whom have personal wounds to heal. A sure-fire baseball Film Blanc; Three Days of the Condor [Blu-ray] - Robert Redford hunted by C.I.A. assassins! Faye Dunaway kidnapped by Robert Redford! Conspiracy paranoia and Hollywood romance mingle in Sydney Pollack's hit spy thriller; and Alexander Korda's Private Lives - Hungarian-English producer-director Alexander Korda is at the top of his game (not to mention the British Film Industry) with these remarkably good big-budget biographies starring folk like Charles Laughton in career-making roles. No Production Code over there -- the dialogue and wit is often very saucy. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

DVD Savant: Wayne's World, Science is Fiction, and Paycheck
Wayne's World This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Wayne's World [Blu-ray] - A good test of essential coolness: seventeen years later, are Wayne and Garth still cool? The movie itself has kept fairly fresh; Science is Fiction: 23 Films by Jean Painlevé - A fascinating career on film -- a French film director created unusual nature and science studies -- influenced by the Avant-Garde movement! Great science and fine art in one package. With other odd Painlevé films, like a 30's color stop-motion animation operetta; and Paycheck [Blu-ray] - The premise of this Sci-Fi thriller is rather ambitious (the source is a Philip K. Dick story) but John Woo turns much of it into standard action escapism: see men point guns at each other's heads! Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

Which flicks are must-sees and which ones "shouldn't [see] the light of a DVD laser, much less the screens of a reputable film festival like this one"? Check out Jason's wrap up of the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival.
