New Movie Reviews: ParaNorman, Cosmopolis, and Robot & Frank
This week in theaters, the team behind Coraline returns with the delightful stop-motion zombie comedy ParaNorman. Read reviews by Jamie S. Rich and Jason Bailey. Robert Pattinson and director David Cronenberg team for a story of anarchy, finance, and haircuts in Cosmopolis. A former jewel their gets back in the game with the help of his robot assistant in Robot & Frank. And director Todd Solondz is back with more of his unwavering misanthropy in Dark Horse. DVDTalk Interview: William Friedkin and Emile Hirsch
DVD Talk chats with William Friedkin Nearly 50 years after his directorial debut, Academy Award-winning filmmaker William Friedkin is still at it. Director of such classics as The French Connection, The Exorcist, and Sorcerer, he teamed up with playwright Tracy Letts in 2006 for Bug, an adaptation of Letts' play about a potentially disturbed veteran. The collaboration between continues with the new film Killer Joe, which stars Emile Hirsch as a man who hires a professional killer (Matthew Mcconaughey) to take out a member of his own family, and gets more than he bargained for. Friedkin and Hirsch recently sat down in Seattle for a roundtable discussion that covers Killer Joe, French Connection Blu-Rays, and Pacquiao. TV on DVD: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Leverage, and Mannix
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Some great TV shows have made their way onto DVD this week including: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Season 1, Vol.1 - most of the action is just as fun as you remember it to be, and you'll fall victim to the theme songs hook for some time to come; Leverage: Season Four - A step up in quality from season three, this fourth season is fun, energetic, and immensely entertaining; and Mannix: The Seventh Season - Another solid season from this veteran detective series. DVD Savant: The Fairy, Rio Grande, and The Saphead
The Fairy This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: The Fairy - A special delight! This cute, fresh French comedy reminds us a bit of Jacques Tati, Buster Keaton and Cirque du Soleil, yet is a special item all its own; Rio Grande - John Ford's third cavalry western teams John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara for the first time, but abandons the director's earlier critical stance to regress to the old format of noble troopers versus devilish Indians; and The Saphead - Buster Keaton's First full-length feature appearance is as a star-for-hire in a funny stage play adaptation that helped him establish his feature persona. This Week's Notable DVDs: Jaws, Dexter, and Community
Jaws Some great discs are being released this week. Rifftrax Live: Manos The Hands of Fate
Rifftrax Live:  Manos The Hands of Fate Mystery Science Theater 3000 alumni Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett are still making fun of bad movies under the Rifftrax moniker. As funny as ever, this Thursday, August 16th, is the date of the next Rifftrax Live Event where they're going to take on one of MST's most famous films: Manos - The Hands of Fate. In movie theaters and for one night only, you won't want to miss this special Fathom event. DVDTalk sent a reviewer to thier live Christmas Show a couple of years ago and it was a hilarious evening.
